I try to not include commentary when I do book pairing posts because its highly non scientific ... except I can not resist my joy to match The Hurricane Wars with Ben Solo falling in love with a feral sand gremlin that just sliced his face open. Alaric gets stabbed by Talasyn and his subconscious says "Imma wife that." He's so pathetic (affectionate).

I've been swinging between devastated and delusional. Somehow I'm holding onto the idea that Ben Solo will still be back in the Rey feature film. Add a layer to the tin foil hat because I imagine a Reylo author was invited to the writers table for that. We'll be in the theater, credits will roll, and theres a whole section of AO3 psueds listed as script consultants 😍

Most of us have ... complicated feelings about The Rise of Skywalker. But! Watching interviews with Adam to get insight into Ben's headspace - "... so long as he's with her, he's on the right path." - has helped me find the hope. Hope many Star Wars fans have held onto to see Ben's story revived. Hope to see the Dyad reunited. Hope that celebrates the strength of love.

Happy Low Battery Friday Y'all!

Yesterday obliterated all my spoons. Poof. I'm going to do less than minimum this weekend and not feel guilty.

What's your comfort do nothing kinda day look like? Are you watching fave shows, rereading, napping, gaming?

Mr Spoons and I are doing movie nights where we pick two movies–one can be a favorite rewatch, but the other has to be something new. We'll do that again tonight.

THIN ICE is one of Kayla's most emotionally raw and vulnerable works yet. Not necessarily in a tear-jerker sorta way, but in how exposed Quinn, Noah, and Beck's fears, anxieties, and hearts are to each other and the reader. We read them at their lowest, lashing out in frustration, irrational in their desperation to be seen or heard. It's so affirming actually to see lovable characters be imperfect. To know that from their most desperate times there is still hope. That love endures even when we're sad, or lost, or weak. That boundaries and promises and compromises are all signs of love. Love doesn't expect perfection; it expects effort, investment, and attention. I know this is getting very vibey, but THIN ICE was a very emotional read for me.

I highly recommend THIN ICE for the high heat, body loving, kink positive smut, and the visceral journey of healing lost and broken hearts. Quinn, Noah, and Beck are amongst the best characters Kayla has written.

ENTITIES TO LOVERS hit me in my weird girl feels. Rory and Ezra have felt othered throughout their lives. They both harbor the fear of being "too much" or "not enough" to be wanted, desired, kept. I loved that their quest to break a curse was less about appeasing the wrath of a ghost, but more so linked to accepting themselves. Rory and Ezra had impeccable rival chemistry. It was a delight to read them fall in love.

Get this on your October TBR!

Ghosts! Are you a skeptic or a believer?

Mr Spoons' grannys and great grandmas and even great great grandmas have a history of making themselves known after they passed. His family owned two lots next door to each other. At one point 5 Generations of the family were living in the houses and apartments there.

After Granny Great (great great grandma) passed, they rented out one of the houses to a family with small children. The kids would visit next door with Mr Spoons family. One day the oldest girl pointed to a hanging picture and said "Its the lady on the stairs." She was seeing Granny Great's ghost on the stairs leading up to the loft room.

His cousin lived in the big family home for many years and had a visit from their Granny (great grandma) after she passed. He was in her former bedroom and she came by to open all the drawers and closet doors to collect her things before departing.

His great grandma on his grandpa's side also took her time paasing on. She died while in assisted living care. Her sister was a resident too, so the staff went to get her to say her goodbyes. Sister leaned over and gave a kiss and said "I love you", and with a nurse and a doctor as witness, great grandma said "I love you too" many minutes after being pronounced dead.

I'm a believer.

LOVE YOU TO DEATH is about ... death, yes, but more so about discovering the joys of a life lived. Period. For Lucy, living looks like surviving all of her hardest days and finding happiness in trinkets, and hobbies, and her cat, and helping her sister plan a wedding. I love that she imagines "what if's" and grand plans, but her second chance priorities are all outside of herself. She's such a good egg. So hard on herself, but always persevering.

Her grim reaper, Daniel, is very confused. He's feeling all the feels all at once, which is very inconvenient as it's threatening his job and very existence. But he can't stop wanting Lucy! He yearns to touch, to protect, to spoil her rotten, to be near, and kiss and kiss and kiss. It's a heady thing having a powerful paranormal being brought to his knees by love. And in the process he learns to live! To crave his own humanity. To forgive himself.

I am usually quite cautious when reading books that tackle mortality, but I trust Jenna to bring the whimsy. So while I ugly cried my way through the contemplations of life and death, I also giggled over perplexing the Grim Reaper with glittery cowboy boots. Lucy and Daniel were so thirsty for each other too. Wow! Their intimacy, physical & emotional, made every page a delight to read.

Congrats Jeeno! Thanks for the feels 💖

Before I stray too far into my own nostalgia, let me tell you why you will love this book even if you're not a hockey fan.

Georgie and Oliver are the absolute sweetest. Georgie's passion for hockey and her Maple Leafs is outmatched only by the loyalty she has to friends and family. She is a ride-or-die bestie, an empathetic educator, and a fierce advocate for equity. Oliver is a shy boy who carries old hurts, yet is still so giving and kind, with a big open heart. He is one of the greenest green flag book boyfriends you're going to meet. Together they make an adorable couple of seeming opposites, but as they fall in love you see how they make a perfectly balanced pair.

I highly recommend this also for readers wanting an immersive experience. The time and setting are made real by anchoring every chapter to a specific day and citing the actual progression of the Toronto Maple Leafs 1992-93 season. The level of detail too is beyond researched, its lived authenticity down to era specific tech, songs and movies, and local landmarks. It really felt like I was sitting in the greys with Georgie at the Gardens, in a booth at the pancake house with Oliver, and at the bar with the Leafs fans at McNally's.

Now I am ready to be vulnerable. I discovered hockey in 1992, which means my first hockey everythings happened during the exact timeline of LOVE WANTS US TO WIN. I was nine years old watching the Kings vs Maple Leafs with all the excitement of a freshly born fan, but without the critical knowing of the fortysomething veteran I am today. I have to proceed carefully from here on out though because I want to avoid all possible spoilers, but with my whole heart I want you to know how happy I am for Georgie's victories as a fan and in life. For her authentic self to be cherished, loved, and cared for. For her dreams to come true.

To all the Georgies, keep your elbows up. Keep demanding accountability from the league, franchises, and players. Make your own community. Protect the most vulnerable among us. And dream and hope and be-Leaf because love wants you to win. by @hideyourspoonsreads
