This viral post (not gonna name the bookseller) is clearly bullshit imo. I'm ashamed that, pre-coffee, I barely glanced at it and so was initially taken in. So many red flags! I'm a bookseller who has received innumerable orders from these AI companies. Many many of my colleagues have, too. Nobody has received an order like this. // The order was placed by… Alphabet, Inc. Lol. Not just Google, no, these rare occult books are so important they must be purchased using the Parent Entity! Note, too, that many of these books can be purchased as cheap modern reprints. Those work perfectly fine for training AI. These companies aren’t so addled by money that they’re spending $3500 on a book they can easily buy for $15.00. Moreover, the accompanying email this fella claims to have received, offering to buy his entire collection “for development of a research library,” is, again, not how these companies operate. They don’t buy this way and they don’t ever state their purpose. Indeed, the main company facilitating mass purchase of books for various AI companies offers as one of their services *total anonymization* so that you don’t have to deal with public backlash. And yet here you have Alphabet, Inc itself reaching out… but using a website (alphabet.com) that is not affiliated with Google or Alphabet Inc but is, rather, a BMW-related site that helps companies manage large fleets of vehicles. Finally, it’s clear that this bookseller’s post was itself written by AI. If you ain’t getting wooden nickel vibes from this stuff, you have my sympathy. by @hidingplaceplace
