Highland Park is coming alive with color! Right now, the landscape is a beautiful mix of green, yellow, and orange, with a few splashes of red beginning to emerge.

It’s a wonderful time to visit, slow down, and appreciate the trees that make this park so special. 🍂

Exploring the park is better together! Tag someone you want to take a walk with in the park and experience the fall foliage together this season 🍁

“We want a ground to which people may easily go after their day’s work is done, and where they may stroll for an hour, seeing, hearing, and feeling nothing of the bustle and jar of the streets, where they shall, in effect, find the city put far away from them.”
- Passage from 1870 Public Parks and the Enlargement of Towns, Frederick Law Olmsted

*Addition to the quote: we love our city and that our park is a preserved natural space within it by @highlandparkconservancy

A little over a year ago, I joined the Highland Park Conservancy Board, and more recently I’ve had the opportunity to take on the role of Program Committee Chair. Tonight was one of those evenings that reminded me exactly why I wanted to get involved. 💚

We were able to host one of my favorite events — a special tour of Gatehouse No. 2 and the Highland Park Reservoir, led by Dave Rowley from the City of Rochester.

There’s something pretty incredible about getting to go behind the gates and experience a part of Highland Park that most people only see from a distance. Dave shared the history of the reservoir, the gatehouse, and the important role this site has played in Rochester’s story.

For me, programming like this is about more than simply hosting an event. It’s about creating opportunities for our community to come together, learn something new, and develop an even greater appreciation for this remarkable park and all the history it holds.

Standing up there tonight, looking across the reservoir and out over Rochester, was a pretty special reminder of how fortunate we are to have this place in our backyard.

A huge thank you to Dave, the City of Rochester, everyone who helped make tonight possible, and everyone who joined us. I’m already looking forward to what we can bring to the community next. 🌳💧

🌳🧁Happy 100th birthday, Monroe County Parks!

I had a chance to wander around Ellison Park—the first park in the county system—before learning more about how Monroe County plans to celebrate this milestone.

There’s plenty ahead, including construction of the new Children’s Pavilion at Highland Park, new buildings at Seneca Park Zoo, and several RIT Big Shot photography projects planned throughout the park system.

A fitting way to celebrate 100 years of parks that have become such an important part of life in Monroe County. taken in Ellison Park by @highlandparkconservancy

🎉🎂 This year marks 100 Years of the @mc23parks system and today, we kicked off a year of special celebrations from Ellison Park, the first park in the system. A century later, the system boasts 22 parks with something for everyone- fishing, kayaking, golfing, hiking, bird watching, carousel rides, and so much more! Photography walks with @kodak_cameraclub and outdoor storytimes with @roccity_library & Monroe County are only a few of the fun things planned in the parks this year. Today, we’re celebrating Highland Park’s past and future.

We’re delighted to share that the Highland Park Conservancy’s newly redesigned and updated website is now live.

The timing is especially meaningful: September 29 marks the anniversary of the dedication of Highland Park’s Children’s Pavilion in 1890, a landmark moment in the park’s history and a reflection of Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision for Highland Park as a place of beauty, gathering, and public life.

More than 135 years later, that legacy continues.

Our new website offers more ways to explore Highland Park’s horticultural heritage, architectural history, archival collections, and ongoing work to preserve and strengthen this remarkable public landscape.

We invite you to enjoy, explore, and engage with Highland Park, and to dig deeper into its history through our collection of archival photographs and materials.

Highland Park is rooted in its history and still growing.

Highland Park Fall Foliage Report (9/27/26)

We are feeling the fall weather inHighland Park, but we’re still mostly green. A few trees and shrubs are starting to show hints of change, but the autumn crocuses are still stealing the show before the bigger foliage display arrives.

In classic Highland Park fashion, we even spotted a rogue lilac blooming again this September just like last year.

A quick guide to our foliage key in the top right corner:

🍁🍁🍁3 leaves = a lot of that color
🍁🍁 2 = some
🍁1 = a little
0 = none.

We’ll keep updating the report as the park moves toward peak color once a week, but as always remember: the park changes daily this time of year just like the spring. taken in Highland Park by @highlandparkconservancy

📸 Help us create this year’s Highland Park Conservancy holiday card by submitting a photo!

Earlier this year, Highland Park lost its beloved Kobus Magnolia. To honor this special tree, we’re looking for photos of it through the years to feature on our 2026 holiday card.

Do you have a favorite photo of the magnolia in bloom, covered in snow, changing colors, or standing proudly in the park?

To be considered, photos should be high resolution and emailed to Milli Piccione at millipiccione@highlandparkconservancy.org.

Your photo could be featured on this year’s holiday card and help us celebrate the memory of one of Highland Park’s treasured trees. 🌸
