We would like to say THANK YOU to the @city.of.sanantoniotx Department of Arts & Culture for being a 2027 Events Grant Recipient for our Sixth installation of @teensonamissionsa : "The Youth Brigade" happening Fall of 2027! This grant supports our entrepreneurial event showcasing our student bands along with San Antonio teen & young adult rockin bands that we see putting in the time and effort! The event also invites citywide young artists and vendors to participate! Next years event will come with a big surprise that will be announced soon! The last month and a half has been a whirlwind, to say the least. It's been a huge honor to have been recognized for the efforts that we, not just me, have put into @highvoltagemusicsa ... I'd like to say one last THANK YOU to celebrated Artist and recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship "genius grant," @vincentvaldez77 for our inclusion in his @aclutx series entitled, "The New Americans", designed as a "portrait of resistance" and a visual reflection of contemporary American life. It was a pleasure to be able to go to his print signings yesterday, where he sat for hours with a very long line throughout the afternoon. The second was a grand recognition by the @sanantonioriverwalk and @visitsanantonio in collaboration with @utsa (thank you @vgrodriguez ), and sponsored by @hennessy is being selected as one of six "Hispanic Heroes", kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month. Seeing my oversized portrait created by super talented muralist Crystal Tamez was a complete surprise! The whole installation at the @thestanthonyhotel on the Riverwalk was quite beautiful. Both were unexpected honors, which I don't take lightly. To that, I will say this program would not happen without the dedicated instructors who are professional touring musicians @odie.bossbass and @bigbadharv210 and many musicians!! This all comes while having our 10th Anniversary celebrating teaching youth in grades 7-12 to play an instrument at no cost, including instruments. Our students start the program by choosing an instrument, learning to play it, being grouped into bands, then ending the schoolyear with several events on professional stages throughout San Antonio, including our annual entrepreneurial event, Teens on a Mission. Our students love classic rock, metal, pop rock to punk rock, and are free to express their creative selves on stage! We're always in need of funding and support, including from private donors, to continue our mission as a no cost program, removing barriers to enrich students from underserved schools and communities who may not otherwise afford a music program. Now that @visitsanantonio and The @thesanantonioriverwalk has it out there, I just want to say I'm filled with gratitude and pride to be one of six individuals that was chosen to be honored as one of the Hispanic Heroes during the kickoff of Hispanic Heritage Month! As a first-generation Mexican-American, I accept this on behalf of being my father's daughter. I don't need accolades for anything I do, but when they do come, it does solidify some of the things that I feel good about that I've accomplished and have achieved being a self-taught person in our community. At the very least, I would like those who feel like they don't have all of the degrees and education that it takes to do what you would like to do, to know experience does matter and that it's never too late to learn on your own. Without that drive and knowledge, some of my accomplishments probably would've never happened.. The six of us being honored have our painted portraits up at six different hotels at the riverwalk. Mine is at the St. Anthony Hotel. @hennessyus has created a cocktail in each of our honors. Mine is The Bella Mule. I was asked what I like to drink, and generally, if I'm gonna have a cocktail, my go-to is a ginger beer and Whiskey, so they created a refreshing drink with their Cognac. If I'm gonna get accolades, I think this is the fun way to do it. Have your portrait up for about fifteen days and a cocktail to go with it! Once again, THANK YOU to the city for the honor to be one of many representing our community! FEATURING THE ART PIECE UP FOR AUCTION by @zanleeduroyartist HIGH VOLTAGE MUSIC PROGRAM'S 10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION & FUNDRAISER SUPPORTING FREE YOUTH MUSIC EDUCATION! 🖤⚡️🎶 ZAN LEE DUROY- is a self-taught American contemporary abstract painter and San Antonio, TX native. Despite living life surrounded and emerged in the arts, DuRoy did not begin painting full-time until 2022 at the age of 53. Her tenacity, skills and unorthodox abstract artwork was quickly recognized by notable galleries and curators who showed her work including Dock Space Gallery Annex in the Lone Star Art District, Mid-Century Modern, Period Modern and a regular at Blue Star Arts Complex. During that time, DuRoy recognized her passion for collaboration and became a regular exhibitor and curator in and around the infamous Blue Star Arts District. Her modern abstract paintings are celebrated for their rich texture. She frequently mixes traditional acrylics with everyday household items like baking soda, joint compound, plaster, and recycled cardboard to build up layers, creating an almost bas-relief effect. Today, we're highlighting the reason for the season...he is why High Voltage Music Program exists. My son Jeremy, who is a 2020 graduate at our longest standing school @idea.soflo and now is a substitute wherever needed for the program, as well as an integral part of staging for all our events. As an affluent songwriter, he is playing and recording with two bands that will be debuting soon, so stay tuned!
