1998 Sealed Japanese Metal Gear Solid for PS1 with promotional Famitsu sticker pop.

The really nice thing about this sealed version of MGS is that it came with this really cool Weekly Famitsu Cross-Review Hall Of Fame sticker on the seal. These stickers were usually given to retail shops in uncut sheets and applied to the packaging of very specific games such as MGS1. The Famitsu cross-review program was formed in the November 22, 1996 issue of Weekly Famitsu. This system was for games that got 32 review points or higher but the physical stickers did not appear until later. In the December 26, 1997 issue of Weekly Famitsu, the magazine explained that, going forward, qualifying Hall of Fame software could have these stickers applied at participating retail stores with the first being around 1998.

Along with the game, I have this promotional Famitsu sticker. These stickers featured the same HOF logo as well as the same artwork as the Japanese MGS1 promotional poster. The stickers were given to retail shops and distributed to customers as a promotional item.

Enjoy!

1997 Final Fantasy VII North American Store Standee

Since today is September 7th, that means it’s been 28 years since the launch of FFVII in North America. This standee would have graced various stores throughout North America and featured the launch date of 9/7/97. Mine has certainly seen better days and has its share of wear but I picked it up for cheap and it’s still an amazing piece to have in the collection. Enjoy!

1998 Metal Gear Solid Gold Foil Poster

These were launch posters available for sale on October 1998. While these were generally sold at shops, Konami LOOK magazine also ran a contest where 5 lucky winners could obtain one in their Sept 1998 issue. If we swipe to the last slide, we can see one of these posters framed up and hanging in the office of @hideo_kojima during the production of MGS2 as well. Enjoy!

1998 Metal Gear Solid UK Release Standee

This standee measures at about 5 feet in height and was used in retail locations throughout UK upon release. The sword handle section on mine was damaged so it took a little bit of repair work. I want to thank @anmgscollection for selling this one to me earlier this year for a great deal. Enjoy!

1998 “Making of Biohazard 2 TV-CM” V-Jump VHS & “On the Set of Resident Evil 2: The TV Commercial” by Norman England

Released through V-Jump in February 1998, the “Making of Biohazard 2 TV-CM” VHS gave fans a rare behind-the-scenes look at the making of the now-iconic Japanese Biohazard 2 television commercial. Readers could mail in a postcard by January 9, 1998 for a chance to receive one of just 2,500 copies. A separate variant was also produced for distribution to video rental stores. The tape documents the production of the commercial directed by legendary filmmaker George A. Romero and starring the late Brad Renfro as Leon S. Kennedy alongside Adrienne Frantz as Claire Redfield.

@norman_c_england was present during the filming and has since documented the production in extraordinary detail in his book, “On the Set of Resident Evil 2: The TV Commercial.” Now available on Amazon, the book is an incredible archive of the shoot, featuring detailed firsthand accounts, production notes, storyboards, interviews, footage, and an extensive collection of references relating to the commercial and its history. For anyone interested in what actually went on behind the scenes, and in seeing some VERY interesting material connected to this legendary piece of Biohazard history, this is an absolute MUST for any serious Biohazard / Resident Evil fan. The book also features contributions from my buddy @venomsnake, whose Resident Evil collection and knowledge are second to none.

Enjoy!

1998 Biohazard 2 “Renfro” Poster

Released in 1998, the poster features American actor Brad Renfro as Leon S. Kennedy in the Japanese live-action promotional campaign for Biohazard 2. The live-action commercial was filmed by the late great horror icon George Romero and there were several piece of merch that are now sought after by collectors such as the poster, this standee and “the making of” VHS tape.

I want to thank @_lachrymal for providing me the reference images from a book by @norman_c_england titled On the Set of Resident Evil 2: The TV Commercial. Norman was part of the production team on the commercial and in Japan during the release of BH2/RE2 and as a result was able to get some amazing shots of the poster being sold right at that point in time. If you look close, you can see that the poster came in a clear protective sleeve which mine still has.

I can’t thank @_lachrymal enough for these images and I hope you check out her profile as she is one of the biggest fans of the franchise that I know and someone who’s always been a supporter of this page from day one. I also encourage people to pick up a copy of Norman’s book as it is currently available on Amazon. I will be doing a post about the TV commercial VHS tape soon once my copy of the book arrives as well!

Enjoy!

2004 Metal Gear Solid 3 Promotional Pizza Box

What kind of New Yorker would I be if I didnt enjoy pizza!? Right here we have a MGS3 promotional pizza box that was printed in Freeport, NY and distributed to various pizzarias in the NY area. This would have been released right around fall of 2004 for the November launch of MGS3. It still has it’s original pizza grease on the box 🤣

1997 Tobal 2 “FIGHTING PREVIEW” with FFVII Movie Selection Promotional VHS

Released as part of Square’s promotional campaign for Tobal 2, this VHS had a “NOT FOR SALE” designation and was offered as a limited preorder bonus to the first 200,000 customers via Square’s DigiCube convenience-store distribution network. This network operated through 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Circle K and Sunkus. DigiCube had been established by Square specifically to distribute videogames through Japanese convenience stores, and Tobal 2 itself was one of the titles sold exclusively through this system.

Officially titled “TOBAL2 FIGHTING PREVIEW with FFVII MOVIE SELECTION,” the VHS contains three main features: a Tobal 2 Music Clip edited to the game’s BGM, a Tobal 2 Fighting Preview showcasing the sequel, and an FFVII High Quality Movie Selection featuring selected CG sequences from Final Fantasy VII. The tape is an interesting continuation of the close marketing relationship between Tobal and Final Fantasy VII. The original Tobal No. 1 famously included the playable Final Fantasy VII demo disc in 1996. Less than a year later, Square once again used the two titles in cross promotion.

I was going to upload the full VHS on here but it’s almost half an hour long and you can just go watch it on YouTube. There is definitely some cool footage in there and things that did not make it into the final release such as certain outfit colors. I also included the original ad as well as the two DigiCube TV commercials in this post. Enjoy!

1997 Final Fantasy VII Best Buy Telephone Card.

These were produced by a company called REALTIME and sold at Best Buy locations during the launch of FFVII in the US. If you swipe in this post, you will see some ads from old Best Buy catalogues fearing this telephone card dated back to August 1997.

Thank you to @westmangames for selling me this one a while back.

1986 First Issue of Famicom Tsushin

I was born on June 26th, 1986 and as a result, not only did I turn 40 this year but so did Famitsu. The first issue of Famicon Tsushin would be released by ASCII just six days before I was born on June 20th, 1986. The magazine would later go onto be renamed Weekly Famitsu Tsushin on July 19, 1991 for issue number 136. Then again on January 1996 for issue 369 it would be shortened to just “Weekly Famitsu”. To this day it is the most successful and longest running Japanese video game magazine.

The magazine cover would feature a character on the cover named べーしっ君 (BASIC-kun / Bēshikkun), The character was created by Susumu Matsushita. Basic-kun was already popular with readers of ASCII’s computer magazine LOGiN. Matsushita would also later go onto create Necky The Fox who would appear on every odd numbered issue with the first being number 7.

These first issues had a unique serial number on the front which acted as a lottery number for prizes announced in later issues. It was done in an attempt to drive sales but it didn’t really work too well as 700,000 issues were printed but less than 200,000 actually sold. This lack of sales made this iconic issue more rare and finding one in this condition is also not easy.

Lastly, I want to point out that this magazine is an interesting piece of video game history because it features some notable contributions such as that of Satoshi Tajiri (later the creator of Pokémon). Tajiri was already involved in Japanese game journalism before Game Freak became a game developer. At the time, he was already known within the industry for publishing the independent fanzine called “Game Freak”, which had earned him a reputation as someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of games and game mechanics. ASCII recruited several enthusiasts like Tajiri to write for the new magazine.

If you who have been following me, you know that I’m a huge fan of Famitsu and it’s a blessing to be able to own this piece of history. I hope you enjoyed!

Signed 1998 Art Of Metal Gear Solid Books & Promotional Brochure.

These “Art Of Metal Gear Solid” books by Yoji Shinkawa were put out by SoftBank for Konami on September 29, 1998. What I have here are two signed examples with one of them being extra special.

The first one is a signed copy by Hideo Kojima while the second one is limited to 100 pieces and signed by Yoji Shinkawa for a special campaign by SoftBank in 1998. My particular book is number 93/100. The book signed by Shinkawa comes with a congratulations letter from SoftBank stating the details and also acts as a sort of letter of authenticity.

Lastly, I included a special brochure for the art book handed out at events such as TGS prior to the launch. This brochure has become quite rare in its own right and a very cool piece to have side by side.

I want to thank both @iammetalgearsolid for selling me the Hideo book a while back and I also especially want to thank @retro.foxhound for driving out from Detroit to NYC and bringing the signed Shinkawa book in person. It’s always great to meet and hang with fellow collectors in person and I’m glad we were able to close the deal on this gem.

Enjoy!
