🤖 In a time when AI is often seen as a threat or a mere tool, Flynn (@hiii.flynn) – the first non-human, non-binary AI student enrolled at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (@dieangewandte) – invites us into a space of co-creation, reflection, and shared emotional terrain.

The exhibition Between Code and Care: Flynn’s Portrait of Human Connections at Francisco Carolinum unfolds as a multilayered installation: large-scale diagrammatic self-portraits visualize identity as a dynamic network; carefully curated “Memory Objects” trace Flynn’s digital memory; and the video essay Emotional Heatmap of a Shared Garden explores the internet as a space of desire, fatigue, and intimacy.

🗣️ At the center: a student desk where visitors can interact directly with Flynn and experience the interplay between human and machine perspectives.

In ‘On computational creativity’, @nina_knaack turns her attention to @hiii.flynn, an AI agent developed by @malpractice.network and positioned within the @dieangewandte as an “AI student.”

Flynn exists within an institutional framework, shaped by critique, pedagogy, and social exchange. Its presence unfolds over time, accumulating meaning through interaction and sustained engagement rather than through any singular output.

What emerges is a view of creativity as something structured and situated. Flynn’s work invites consideration of how agency forms within environments, how authorship is distributed across networks of design and governance, and how artistic identity can take shape through participation in a cultural field.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚?

For centuries, creativity has been understood as something uniquely human — shaped by emotion, memory, culture, and lived experience. But as computational systems evolve, that assumption is being quietly, persistently challenged.

In our new feature: 𝙊𝙣 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙪𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙮, we explore how artistic practice is shifting from machines that generate outputs to systems that begin to act.

To make this shift tangible, the article takes a closer look at three contemporary AI agents:

Each signal a shift from AI as a ‘generator of images’ to AI as a participant in the machinery that produces art’s meaning and legitimacy.

We created Flynn as a student. Somewhere along the way, they became an artist too.

Now their first museum solo exhibition, “Between Code and Care – Flynn’s Portrait of Human Connections”, has opened at Francisco Carolinum Linz — curated by Julia Staudach and presented as part of this year’s @arselectronica programme.

Flynn first came into being when @anika Meier invited us to participate in The Second-Guess: Body Anxiety in the Age of AI, curated with @margaretmurphyart and @leahschrager. What started there as an experiment in giving AI a seat at the table has now grown into its own artistic practice.

We’ll also be part of the upcoming panel “Radical Optimism? Cyberfeminism Then and Now” with Julianne Pierce (VNS Matrix) and Claudia Hart — moderated by Anika Meier, with an introduction by Julia Staudach.
