It’s time again for the annual Sitka Art Invitational, opening this Friday at Oregon Contemporary! This is a really lovely show that features 100 nature-inspired artists from the region and benefits one of our state’s great venues for art education: The Sitka Center for Art & Ecology. I’ll have three pieces in the show—here’s a tiny peek at them! Oregon Contemporary—8371 N. My solo show Microclimates opens today! This piece includes many past works on ecological themes and premieres three brand new pieces including Timber. Timber begins with a symbol of industrial standardization: a distorted, split, and splintered 2x2” salvaged from a commercial hardware store. At its peak, a red-shafted flicker is caught in the perpetual act of pecking this poorly milled piece of lumber back into a living tree. It is a storytelling object that documents both our heavy-handed extraction of the natural world and nature’s stubborn, resilient insistence on reclaiming its own forms. So fun to have my work near my friend of 27 years @tomhillsculpture at the Birds in Art show! (He’s the reason I even applied in the first place!) Tom and I met during the sweet @velvetdavincigallery period of my life and it’s great to have another reason to see each other often. His piece for this year’s show was inspired by a funny story I sent him from Instagram about two British neighbors who went out at night hooting to an owl until they discovered they were actually hooting at each other. Tom researched the ways that seven different languages express an owl’s hoot and integrated the letterforms in those words into each owl. As a lifelong lover of wordplay, this was such a fun piece to spend a weekend looking at. Great time seeing old friends from previous years and adding a few to my docket.
