Alice von Hildebrand: Mary Never Knelt in DEFEAT

Simone de Beauvoir left the Church as a teenager. In The Second Sex she claims that at Bethlehem, for the first time in history, a woman kneels in defeat before a newborn male child.

Alice sends you to Luke. The Gospel says Mary wrapped him in swaddling clothes. The shepherds come. In Matthew the magi come and adore. There is not a word that the Virgin knelt. Knees have no sex. If anyone knelt, Joseph could have knelt too. The magi prostrated themselves. That is not Mary defeated by a baby boy.

Nietzsche's Big Idea Is as OLD as Adam and Eve

Jonathan J. Sanford, President of the University of Dallas, argues that Nietzsche made the moral law an act of the will, and that Adam and Eve got there first: they wanted to be the makers of good and evil.

Pride was the sin of Eden. Dietrich von Hildebrand saw it as a root of all moral evil. Comment COURSE for a free 7-day introduction to his life and philosophy.

Professor D.C. Schindler: Beauty Is NOT Subjective

A dozen people look at the same form and only one says aha. "That's not because beauty is subjective. It's because it's objective," says D.C. Schindler. "But it's an objective in a way that requires subjectivity."

Beauty is real, not a matter of taste. Dietrich von Hildebrand showed why. Comment COURSE for a free 7-day introduction to his life and thought.

Alice von Hildebrand: Why Her Husband FLED Hitler's Germany

Many of us close our eyes when danger is near, Alice says, because once you see, you have to act. Dietrich von Hildebrand did the opposite. His philosophy let him recognize the poison of Nazism early: the anti-Semitism, the brutality, the contempt for the person.

Dietrich von Hildebrand's stand against the Nazis has a full lesson of its own in our free 7-day email course on his life and thought. Comment COURSE and we'll send you the link to sign up.

Fill Your Mind With Slop and Noble Feelings Are IMPOSSIBLE

"I can't control a feeling, but I can certainly influence the feelings." Dr. Maria Wolter on why a mind fed on trash cannot have noble feelings.

Professor Jonathan Sanford: Aristotle Said You Can't Be Friends With GOD

Aristotle held that friendship with God was out of the question. Jonathan J. Sanford, President of the University of Dallas, says Christ's incarnation, passion and resurrection make us adopted sons and daughters, and show just how worthy we are of God's love.

Dietrich von Hildebrand, the man our Project is named for, wrote of union with Christ. Comment COURSE for a free 7-day introduction to his life and thought.

In his Aesthetics, Dietrich von Hildebrand names six attitudes that can stand between us and the beauty of a work of art:

1. An interest in what is portrayed, rather than in the art itself
2. Familiarity, mistaken for beauty
3. Fame and fashion
4. The prejudice of nationalism
5. "Chronolatry": valuing a work only because it is new, or only because it is old
6. Seeing a work too much in light of the period to which it belongs

"A special kind of arrogance leads one to regard the epoch in which one lives as especially important and valuable."
Dietrich von Hildebrand, Aesthetics

This post is based on PJ Poscimur's essay at Letters from the Old World, which explores each of these attitudes with paintings from Vermeer to Malevich. The aim, PJ concludes, is not to empty ourselves of every preference, but to become aware of what we bring to a work, so that we can receive the beauty it offers.

St. Edith Stein was born in Breslau on October 12, 1891, on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. She was the youngest of eleven children in a Jewish family that was keeping the day.

“God is truth. All who seek truth seek God, whether this is clear to them or not.”

The line comes from a letter of 1938 (Self-Portrait in Letters, trans. Josephine Koeppel). A student of Edmund Husserl at Göttingen and later his assistant at Freiburg, she came to the Catholic faith through philosophy, and through reading the Life of St. Teresa of Ávila in a single night in 1921.

At Göttingen she joined the Philosophical Association that Dietrich von Hildebrand had co-founded, and the two met at the funeral of their teacher Adolf Reinach in 1917.

She entered the Carmel of Cologne in 1933 and died at Auschwitz in August 1942 as Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Pope St. John Paul II canonized her in 1998.

Dietrich von Hildebrand was born in Florence on October 12, 1889, the only son of the sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand and his wife, Irene.

The evening before, a young Richard Strauss visited their family villa. Alice von Hildebrand later wrote that her husband was "born under the aegis of music." It stayed with him all his life.

In light of his birthday, we share a line from his book The Art of Living:

"Reverence is the indispensable presupposition for all deep knowledge."

Today we give thanks for his life and witness.

D.C. Schindler: Why Are There So Few Martyrs for BEAUTY?

People die for truth and for moral principle, but rarely for beauty. Yet for Balthasar, D.C. Schindler explains, it is by virtue of beauty that truth is really true and goodness is really good.

Dietrich von Hildebrand defied the Nazis and wrote two volumes on beauty. Comment COURSE for a free 7-day introduction to his life and philosophy.
