Write five lines before you hit record.
It’s a simple way to turn any video into a story. Answer these five questions:

1. Where are you?
2. What do you want?
3. What’s in the way?
4. What changes?
5. What’s different now?

My last reel followed these five lines. This is the first episode in a series on storytelling for content creators. I’m learning as I go and sharing what works.

Save this for your next video, and send it to a creator friend who’s working on their storytelling.

My content isn’t bad, and that’s the problem. On this journey to be at top tier content creator, I’ve started to reach the limit of my skills. I’ve realized that the top creators have something in common: they’re great storytellers.

The format doesn’t matter, the niche doesn’t matter, but what keeps people coming back is their ability to craft a story and even a world around themselves and their interests. That’s what keeps people coming back.

So now I’m taking time to study and learn craft of storytelling. Visuals, colors, story arcs, tempo, all of it plays a role in telling a great storyteller, and I want to be great.

If you’re on that journey too, or just want to pick up some tips to help your content, i hope you follow along. taken in Charlotte, North Carolina by @himrmackenzie

Making social media content at almost 40 feels cringe. Every day I struggle with the idea that I should “have a real job”. I had one, and I was miserable. I wasn’t fulfilled. I missed time with my kids. Almost a year after being laid off, I think that this journey, even when it’s hard is one of the best things that’s happened to me.

If anything, I hope that it can help others see that chasing after big goals is worth it, even if it’s scary. Taking those first steps is terrifying. But if you believe that you can figure it out, you will. If you believe in your ability to make it work, then you will.

The best part about it? Hearing others say that it inspired them to do something with their dreams too. Thank you all for being here, thanks for helping build this.

Love to everyone ❤️ taken in Charlotte, North Carolina by @himrmackenzie

Most of us think “I have a boring, normal life. Why should I document it?”.

Here’s why:
Most people aren’t always on epic adventures, no matter what you see on social media. Most of us, live normal, boring lives.

But isn’t that the point? Not every day is a trip, a cool brand shoot, or something epic. Most days are like this. The slow cadence of every day life is what we all experience. It’s that human experience that’s uniquely beautiful. The rhythm of every day life is beautiful, and documenting it helps me see just how special it really is.

So whatever your life looks like, there’s someone (or a lot of someones) out there just like you. Seeing the same things, doing the same things, experiencing the same things.

Isn’t that worth remembering? taken in Charlotte, North Carolina by @himrmackenzie

How to pitch brands as a creator and get a reply

I spent years in corporate marketing reading brand pitches. Most of the DMs and emails asked for my time without giving me a reason to say yes.

These are the three parts of a brand pitch I'd rewrite first:

The opening line. Name their product, say how you use it, and lead with one content idea.
The proof. Share one real result from a recent post, like views or saves, and link to it.
The ask. Make it one clear question they can answer in a single reply.

Brand managers skim. The more specific your pitch, the easier it is to say yes. This works for brand deals, UGC work and gifted collabs.

Save this for your next pitch, and follow along if you're building your platform. I share what I've learned working with brands, and how I fit this work around being a dad, travel and the rest of life. taken in Charlotte, North Carolina by @himrmackenzie

Building a creative business while also trying to be a great dad feels impossible to balance most days.

But having a plan and knowing what happens on which days makes it so much easier. Every day is dedicated to one task or set of tasks that are required to run the business.

This keeps me focused, on track, and delivering client work on time, while also maintaining some balance with home life.

Monday: Admin work, follow ups, book keeping
Tuesday & Wednesday: Content shooting
Thursday: Editing and delivery
Friday: Delivery, last minute edits, book keeping and invoicing

Having designated days for each task has made this journey feel much more manageable, and helps me prepare for when the kids get sick, vacations, and all those surprise half-days when I need to be fully present st home😬 taken in Charlotte, North Carolina by @himrmackenzie

How many times have you heard that “being consistent” is the key to growing online? Yeah, me too. I’ve even said it.

But when I tried it, guess what happened? Nothing.

No growth.
No engagement.
And I even lost followers.

Being consistent is just the prerequisite. Knowing how to keep your audience engaged, and understanding what they want to hear from you is how you increase watch time.

And more watch time means more ad revenue for Instagram, which means more growth and visibility for you. taken in Charlotte, North Carolina by @himrmackenzie
