Do you remember this song?

It reminds me of such an innocent part of my childhood—a time of peace, joy, and curiosity about the world. A time exploring felt fun and rewarding.

When I hear it, it fills me with memories of the little kid in me who loved to learn, explore, imagine, and discover. Peace floods my soul, and kindness quietly sits beside me, reminding me of something true about who I’ve always been.

I wanted to share this song because it sparked something in me. This rendition felt like the adult remembering the child—the person I am now reaching back and sitting beside the little boy I once was.

And for a moment, they both get to listen together.

What’s a song that takes you back to your childhood?

Thank so much @belathehuman and @_official_eg for taking me/us down memory lane. Such a beautiful moment. by @hintsofhealing

A night of poetry, vulnerability, love, and community. Thank you to everyone who pulled up, shared space, and made the room what it was.

Hosted by Gary Francis, this was a beautiful reminder of what happens when we give people room to feel, speak, and be heard.

Until the next one. 💗

Today was a day of connection, creation, and learning new skills.

I had the honor of participating in the Beyond the Pattern workshop led by Kandy G. Lopez, and it was such a laid-back, fun, and inspiring experience. The atmosphere was welcoming, creative, and free of pressure. One of my favorite parts was the reminder that mistakes are okay—they’re simply part of the creative process. There was always room to adjust, experiment, and keep creating.

During the workshop, Kandy challenged us to continue our pieces at home using spray paint, different types of paint, and other creative techniques. I accepted that challenge, and this is what I came up with. I may add a few more touches, and who knows—it might even become part of my Boxes & Beds collection.

Beyond making art, I met some incredible people and made meaningful connections that I hope continue well beyond today. Experiences like this remind me why I love creating alongside community.

A huge thank you to Hued Songs for making this event free and accessible to the public. It was truly something special, and judging by the incredible turnout, I wasn’t the only one who felt that way.

Thank you, Kandy, for so generously sharing your gifts and creating space for others to explore, experiment, and create.

For too long, I’ve created in a silo.

This year, I’m inviting people into the process.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at a poem becoming a piece of visual art.

This work is part of a series I’m calling Boxes and Beds, inspired by a childhood memory of my grandfather keeping his most valuable possessions in a small cigar box beneath his bed. That image has stayed with me for years.

I’ve come to believe we all have our own “boxes” and “beds”—the things we carry, the stories we inherit, and the places where those stories shape us. Through this series, I’m exploring how ordinary objects become vessels for memory, culture, trauma, resilience, and healing.

This piece is about reclaiming the belt—not to erase the past, but to create space for honest conversations about physical punishment, family, culture, and healing. As a Jamaican American, I’m especially interested in how these conversations unfold across Caribbean communities while recognizing they’re shared by many cultures around the world.

I’m also considering adding a clothes hanger to the piece. Does it deepen the story, or does the belt say enough on its own?

More than anything, I’m hoping this work connects me with fellow artists, poets, storytellers, and anyone who believes art can help us have difficult conversations with honesty and compassion.

I’d love to hear from you:
• What object from your childhood still carries a story?
• Fellow artists—does the hanger belong?

Thanks for being part of the journey.

If you haven’t experienced Zykeria’s exhibition yet, do yourself a favor and go.

It’s one of the most heartwarming, community-centered exhibitions I’ve experienced in a long time. Every photograph is filled with care, tenderness, and intention. The beauty isn’t just in the images themselves—it’s in the way they invite you to slow down, notice the small things, and remember the quiet ways love and community show up every day.

The entire exhibition feels gentle. Kind. Wholesome.

You can feel Zykeria’s vision in every detail. She reminds us that some of the most extraordinary moments are found in ordinary people, ordinary places, and everyday acts of connection.

Take your time when you go. Don’t rush through it. Sit with the work. Let it move you. Let it remind you to love a little deeper, pay attention a little longer, and appreciate the beauty that already surrounds us.

A huge shout-out as well to Danna, the artistic director. So much of what makes an exhibition special happens behind the scenes, and it was evident that an incredible amount of care, thought, and work went into bringing this vision to life. The collaboration between you both created something truly beautiful.

I’m also incredibly honored to be one of the featured artists in the exhibition. Seeing my poem, “There Is a Tree of Life in Overtown,” displayed alongside one of my favorite photographs that Zykeria captured was a special moment I’ll always cherish. It was a privilege to have my words in conversation with her beautiful imagery.

Congratulations, Zykeria. Thank you for creating a space that reminds us what community can feel like.

I’ll definitely be going back just to sit with it all again.
