Landscape of Traces, an exhibition by artists Wanda Holopainen @wanda.ataa and Naomi Holopainen @noomi.aba.ataa at Photographic Gallery Hippolyte, continues their collaborative exploration of archives, memory and the ways in which knowledge is carried across generations and places. The exhibition examines how histories are remembered, preserved and passed on through objects, materials and practices. A little throwback to Juliana Irene Smith’s intimate and candid look at family life, belonging and finding a home in Finland. Good Feelings Every Day was chosen as the winner of the 2025 Finnish Photobook Award.

Good Feelings Every Day. Juliana Irene Smith noticed those four words in early 2020, as she was walking through Helsinki, the city she now calls home. She snapped a photo of the Karaoke bar window and kept going. Good Feelings Every Day became her mantra, a little bit of optimism.

She started to use the term for a body of photographic works – in her other artworks the words are less sentimental. The play and use of humor with often violent words makes space to acknowledge the pain as well as taking ownership of crass harmful sentiments.

A Yashica 35mm film camera accompanies her and her family as they make their way in Finland and the good feelings. It is a distant cry from the California past that she fled at the age of sixteen. Finland is where Smith came to understand what it means not only to be at home, but to feel at home. Still, it’s not about a place. It’s about moving forward – a visual narrative of daily life: not always good feelings every day, but sometimes, it is.

The book is published by Utu Press @utu.painaa , and the covers come in different colours.

𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! Eero Yrjölä and Aleksi Kolmonen's exhibition When Our Sinful Souls Find an Angel in One Another continues the collaboration between the two artists. A shared theme in their work has been a reflection on the essence of the angel.

Aleksi Kolmonen @aleksikolmonen creates nude self-portraits inspired by Finnish schlager music and calls himself an angel. A Helsinki-based community artist working in the visual arts, Kolmonen primarily works with constructed imagery. Central to his richly aestheticised visual world is the documentation of the queer community, as well as its active creation and strengthening. Through portraits, Kolmonen creates landscapes in which it is possible to be seen and encountered.

Eero Yrjölä @eeroyrjola is a nonbinary artist living and working in Helsinki. In their artistic practice, Yrjölä explores experiences of the body, gender, and sexuality. They work across a range of media, with a particular focus on installation. In recent years, they have explored the materiality of clay. Through clay, and almost by chance, layers of emotions and desires take shape, unfold, and breathe.

𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! The body of work in Elina Vainio's@e_vain_ exhibition consists of photographs taken on a phone using reflections in a bent mirror film. The printed photographs are mounted onto steel plates with a thin layer of beeswax. Through repeated treatments, the beeswax coating creates a form that moves away from the image’s original photographic surface, giving the image a new shape.

Optical distortions, material layers, and the gradual loss of definition are set alongside the internal logic of the images: rather than being carried by clear meaning, the viewer is held by the repetition of perceptual and linguistic distortions. In Vainio’s process, deviations in the image do not point to dysfunction but bring into view the absurd aesthetics of human existence.

Small collection of photographs by Toivo Heinimäki, made between 2022 and 2024 in Grassina, Italy, Sillamäe, Estonia, and Riga, Latvia.

The photographs were taken in an attempt to find something homely and warm within unfamiliar surroundings. The sparse landscapes, the built environment, and the still-life details captured on b&w film shape a sense of place and time that exist both physically and only in Heinimäki’s head.

The exhibition by Eero Yrjölä @eeroyrjola and Aleksi Kolmonen @aleksikolmonen at Hippolyte Studio continues their collaborative work, bringing together Kolmonen’s photography and Yrjölä’s ceramic pieces. In their collaborative practice, authorship and different methods become intertwined.

In their exhibition When Our Sinful Souls Find an Angel in One Another, the artists explore the essence of the angel through self-portraiture, playing with the abundance and emptiness of glossy picture cards.

Elina Vainio’s @e_vain_ focus is on a layered and fragmented perceptual experience, a memory composed of breaks and gaps, and a corporeality that attaches itself to words while constantly tearing apart and remaining susceptible to distortion. In Vainio’s work, consciousness does not appear as a clear psychological reality, but rather as a cluster of highly contingent traces.

Vainio's experimental practice, in which artistic thinking takes place through the particularity of the method employed and is constrained by the properties of a new material, emphasises the question of the uniqueness of form and matter. In the case of speaking beings, it is this corporeal uniqueness that makes a coherent and unified mode of being, or a lasting anchoring of the self, impossible.
