Walking through Times Square last night, I reminded of something important about my life.It was 1990; I was ten years old, visiting New York with my family for the very first time. I spotted a camera in a shop window, asked my father many times to buy it for me, and—to my delight—he did. It was the very first camera I could call my own. 36 years have passed, and here I am again, walking through Times Square with a camera in hand. My father is no longer with us, but I felt as though I had finally found the answer to that day. Everything happens exactly as it is meant to.

Thank you @womenstreetphotographers

Last day of @kantaya_new’s takeover! ❤️📸

What an amazing week it has been! A huge thank you to @kantaya_new for introducing us to such incredible photographers and sharing their wonderful stories with our community.

We’re so grateful for all your hard work, dedication, and the love and care you put into organizing this beautiful takeover. Your enthusiasm and commitment to our community mean so much to us!

This wraps my week on @womeninstreetvienna. Five days, five stories.

Hello, everyone! @kantaya_new here for my last day on @womeninstreetvienna.
With Halloween tomorrow, today’s series felt right to close the week.

Hiroko Hirota is a Tokyo-based street photographer documenting urban culture and human behavior. She is the winner of the 2026 Women Street Photographers Artist Residency (@womenstreetphotographers).

Shibuya Halloween: Between Reality and Fantasy

Over several years, she has photographed young people gathering in costume in Shibuya on Halloween night, despite official calls to refrain from celebrating, revealing the tension between social rules and the desire to break free from everyday life.

Thank you to @emarisphotography and the @womeninstreetvienna team for making space for women photographers, and to @pong_malila, @helloepiphany, @kaobuwalks, @aparna.guli and @hirokohirota for trusting me with their work.

And thank you to everyone who followed along this week.
