This is my version of an ancient Chinese hu. The original was made of bronze which is much easier to use to join up the handle segments. I tried making it all in clay, but the connections kept cracking. So I decided to use copper wire, and I like the contrast in materials. It was made with my favorite Atlantic Autumn White clay made by Laguna. This is my third Mogollon/Mibres bowl. When researching artifacts to replicate I’m am constantly drawn to the sharp black and white imagery. Instead of making 4 different bowls based on the images I liked I used elements from them all to make one compilation bowl. This is my version of aa ancient Etruscan oil pitcher. I had been waiting to build this piece until I felt ready to attempt throwing a donut. This is still my favorite replica I’ve made. It’s a replica of a Viking horn made in the 11th Century CE. It was made using my favorite white clay, Laguna’s Atlantic Autumn’s White with a underglaze wash mix of Amaco”s Terra Cotta and Red Brown. One of my first historic pots was a replica of a Jomon pot from ancient Japan. I don’t tend to make my replica pots thin walled (understatement), so this pot does not only resemble an exercise kettle bell, it has the weight to be used as one. by @historicpotteryreplicas

Pottery from the Mimbres Valley during the Mogollon culture catches my eye every time I do research for a new piece. So I’ve decided to make a trio of my three favorite Mimbres designs. Once again I used Kiwi Underglazes, which I find moves on clay like a quality paint moves on canvas.

This “greedy cup” project is not my friend right now. 1st try - boom in kiln because of a design flaw on my part. 2nd try -dropped it on the way to the kiln. 3rd try / boom in kiln again, this time I was afraid of something happening to it before I got it into the kiln, so I rushed the drying process. BUT … I plan to be victorious on my forth attempt. It will however be a smaller and way more simple design. by @historicpotteryreplicas

I love the graphic quality of these Casa Grandes inspiration pots and was excited to try my hand combining the imagery on both into one replica pot. The plan was always to age the pot after final firing, but as of now I like how sharp the images are. ((I’d bet good money, however, that within 6 months it will look aged). I left the background raw clay and used Kiwi Ungerglaze for the black and the orange colors. (I absolutely love how smooth they are to paint with. Loved the smiley faces on the reference pedestal plate found in a necropolis on the banks of the Rio de Coche River in Panama. The details were easy for me to obsess over, but the results of my replica make me smile. One of the harder builds and the most difficult to paint piece I’ve made so far. But I am very happy with how this Inca Urpu replica turned out. I wanted the colors to be more contrasting and after repainting it all 3 times, ended up with the color combination I love.
