Thanks to @newcastleartspace Hunter Emerging Art Prize (HEAP) for redefining the terms of what is an emerging artist, this old bird is a finalist!

Pathographic Studies 04 draws on my lived experience of chronic illness to explore the body as both subject and site of investigation. Through performance and video-derived chronophotography, sequential stills are layered to trace subtle repetitions and disruptions of movement. Referencing nineteenth-century medical motion studies, the work reclaims the clinical gaze through self-representation. Rather than producing a fixed record of pathology, these fragmented images reveal a body negotiating endurance, uncertainty, and change.

It started testing on a video of my niece then on myself in the garage at my unit before the shooting began. Many videos and much washing of dirty bare feet, testing of paper types, zip lock bag stuffing, wall layout trials and an exhibition began. by @hithereclare

from the series CHRONOP: Pathographic Studies 11 April - 3 May 2026 @straitjacket_artgallery

Opening Saturday 11 April, 11am – 5pm ALL WELCOME

CHRONOP: Pathographic Studies, draws on my lived experience of chronic illness and the tension between being observed as a medical body and understanding myself from the inside. Using performance and video-derived chronophotography, I extract sequential stills from video to trace small shifts and repetitions of the body in motion. by @hithereclare

This is Clare Weeks @hithereclare she is one of the @newcastleartspace Mentors for 2026!
Clare Weeks is a Photomedia Artist known for her experimental, interdisciplinary practice spanning digital and performance video art. Her work focuses on creating evocative autographic portraits that navigate the complex intersections of illness, identity, and the body. Her art invites reflection on how fragility and endurance coexist, and how a distinct beauty can emerge even in the presence of decay.
While primarily focused on digital and video works, Clare's practice occasionally extends to alternative processes such as cyanotypes, lumens, or performative acts like quietly burying a bird after a photoshoot as part of her ongoing dialogue between life and art, where beauty and decay keep uneasy company.
Clare holds a PhD from the University of Newcastle (2020) for her project “Theatre, autopathography and the medicalised self: imaging health from the shadows of illness.” She has contributed extensively to the arts sector as an educator, curator, and mentor, actively supporting the development of emerging artists and contemporary practice in the Hunter region and beyond.
Clare is one of twelve mentors for 2026 including: @hithereclare @danimarti0 @deirdre_bean @h_ollymacdonald
