Opening this weekend at Maitland Regional Art Gallery, we’re proud to announce that Whip is among the stella lineup of Hunter based exhibiting artists for the new exhibition UPRIVER DOWNRIVER. Created for this show, our work CONFLUENCE is a collective meditation on place, bodies and self, and features 20 photographers from our collective. Exploring bodies, emotions, natural and built forms, the work showcases the varied photographic approaches within the group. Opening this Saturday 11 April from 11am-5pm in Gallery 2 is Clare Weeks’s solo exhibition “CHRONOP: Pathographic Studies”. How do you find your subject matter? My work sits in what I call the shadows of illness. I draw from my own lived experience of chronic disease and the tension between being observed as a medical body and understanding myself from the inside. What techniques do you use? I work with performance and video-derived chronophotography to trace the subtle shifts and repetitions of a body in motion. Sequential still images are extracted from video footage, producing echoes and instabilities that recall early motion studies. In installation, I incorporate clinical materials such as zip-lock archival bags to sort, store and fragment these bodily traces. Who are your influences? I’m influenced by 19th-century neurological gait studies by Muybridge and Richer, medical archives, and my continued research into autopathography, writing the self through illness. @hithereclare #straitjacket_artgallery #straitjacket

This is Clare Weeks @hithereclare she is one of the @newcastleartspace Mentors for 2026! Clare Weeks is a Photomedia Artist known for her experimental, interdisciplinary practice spanning digital and performance video art. Her work focuses on creating evocative autographic portraits that navigate the complex intersections of illness, identity, and the body. Her art invites reflection on how fragility and endurance coexist, and how a distinct beauty can emerge even in the presence of decay. While primarily focused on digital and video works, Clare's practice occasionally extends to alternative processes such as cyanotypes, lumens, or performative acts like quietly burying a bird after a photoshoot as part of her ongoing dialogue between life and art, where beauty and decay keep uneasy company. Clare holds a PhD from the University of Newcastle (2020) for her project “Theatre, autopathography and the medicalised self: imaging health from the shadows of illness.” She has contributed extensively to the arts sector as an educator, curator, and mentor, actively supporting the development of emerging artists and contemporary practice in the Hunter region and beyond. Come behind the scenes as curator, Narene Frankel, installs “Blooming”, an exhibition commencing at Lighthouse Arts this weekend! Blooms are a symbol in our society that are recognised in life events expressing joy, sadness/loss, excitement, new beginnings and more. The fundamental of giving a bloom is an extension of expression from the heart, for the ‘Blooming’ exhibition artists were given the opportunity to explore their own interpretation within this focal of flora and moments in life that make us bloom. By exploring individual interpretations, we have created a deeply heartfelt exhibition, showcasing artworks, short stories and poetry that are unique and personal.
