Coming back home to Wits always feels special, but yesterday felt particularly surreal. 🤍

Not too long ago, I was the young girl sitting amongst the crowd, listening to people speak, learning, dreaming and trying to find my own place in the world. Yesterday, I found myself back in that same space, but this time as a guest, a speaker and a member of the judging panel.

The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment was such an important part of my journey, so being invited back to participate in the Waste to Wonder exhibition felt incredibly full-circle. The event brought together creativity, innovation, fashion and sustainability, showing how something we often consider waste can be transformed into something meaningful.

What made the evening even more meaningful was getting to speak to students about environmental sustainability, the role young people can play in creating change, and my own journey through Miss Earth South Africa.

I am deeply grateful to my faculty for inviting me back and trusting me with the opportunity to share my story. Moments like these remind me why I continue to say yes to opportunities that allow me to serve, learn and inspire.

I especially hope that more young girls see themselves in spaces like these and realise that they don’t have to wait for permission to make a difference. Start where you are. Use what you have. And believe that the work you do in your community matters. . @aliciaduminy_ thank you for the dress❤️ by @hlombe_

The Sibani Dress 🌍✨

Wearing this beautiful creation by Manyaku @manyakum on the day of the Miss Earth South Africa announcement was such a special moment for me.

The intricate beadwork, the textures and the entire design felt like such a beautiful representation of what Miss Earth stands for: our connection to the Earth, being grounded, and celebrating the beauty that exists in nature and in our heritage.

Thank you, Manyaku, for creating the stunning Sibani Dress and for allowing me to wear your beautiful work on such a memorable day. 🤎🌿. Dress by: @manyakum UD Fashion House taken in Thaba Eco Hotel and Spa by @hlombe_

I have spent so much time working towards this moment, praying for it, imagining it, and giving everything I could to it. And yet, when my name was called and I was crowned Miss Earth South Africa, a part of me still couldn’t believe that I had actually made it here.

More than anything, this moment made me look back.

Back to Springfield Convent Senior School, and to the women who poured into me long before I understood just how much their presence would mean in my life.

Mrs Van Zyl, I remember the first time I took a flight and how desperately I wanted to tell you that I had seen cumulonimbus clouds so close that it felt like I could reach out and touch them. I remember road trips where I would look out of the window at the buttes, the igneous rocks and the way the earth seemed to change before my eyes. You taught me to look at the world with curiosity, and you gave me the language to understand what I was seeing.

Ms Jacobs, my rock from the very beginning. I don’t think I will ever be able to properly put into words how much you have meant to me. You have been there from the start, believing in me, encouraging me and reminding me of who I was, even when I couldn’t see it for myself. I owe you more than I could ever say.

Mrs Barbara Houghton, my principal, a woman I have always admired and looked up to. You showed me what strength, grace and leadership could look like. Even from afar, your support has never gone unnoticed. Every message, every congratulations, every moment you have celebrated me has meant more than you know.

And Mrs Bronwyn Wyllie, my library teacher, thank you for taking me in and treating me as though I were your own daughter. You made me feel seen, cared for and safe. I may not have realised it at the time, but the love and kindness you showed me became part of the woman I am today.

It is funny how life works. We grow up, we move away, we become busy, and sometimes years pass without speaking to the people who once played such an important role in our lives. But then a moment like this happens, and suddenly you realise that they are still there, woven into the person you have become. by @hlombe_
