We are excited to announce the restoration of the crosswalk on Nuʻuanu Avenue at Bates Street!

The uncontrolled crosswalk was not re-marked following the most recent paving of Nuʻuanu Avenue since it traversed four lanes and did not have adequate safety features to meet either local or federal engineering standards.

One mauka-bound travel lane was converted into a left-turn lane, and a new quick-build pedestrian refuge island was installed on the mauka side of the intersection to make the crossing safer while we await a longer-term roadway rehabilitation and Complete Streets project.

Follow and stay tuned for the completed crosswalk improvements! 🚸✨

At some point during the day, everyone is a pedestrian. Even when you drive, the second you step into the parking lot you become a pedestrian. However you travel, be alert, stay cautious, and watch out for each other. 🚸

Pedestrian safety is everyone’s responsibility. Let's work together to make Honolulu's streets safer! 🤙🏽🌺

The 2026 @weekwithoutdriving is here! Experience transportation through the perspective of someone who doesn't drive or own a car.

Experience what pedestrians, bicyclists, #TheBus riders and other mobility device users go through when crossing the street, sidewalk, or just getting to where they need to go.

Put yourself in their shoes and try it for yourself!

Small trips still count!

Can you go a week without driving?🚶🏽‍♀️🚲🚌 During the week of October 1st, we’re asking you to give it a try.

For many people, going without a car isn't a choice. It's a daily reality. One in three people in the U.S. can’t drive due to age, disability, income and other factors. Instead, they rely on public transit, carpooling, walking, biking, and rolling.

This Week Without Driving is an opportunity to reflect on the transportation challenges our neighbors face and explore how complete streets make getting around Oʻahu safer and easier for everyone.

Leave the keys at home, try a new way to travel, and join the movement toward a more accessible and resilient Hawaiʻi. 🌺🤙🏽

A safer crossing for our Nuʻuanu community!

The new crosswalk at Nuʻuanu Avenue and Bates Street is officially complete! Thanks to community input and the City’s Complete Streets Program, these improvements will make it safer for students at Hawai‘i Baptist Academy and everyone who walks through the area to get to and from home, work, church, or for exercise.

The project also brings changes to the traffic pattern, so please slow down, stay alert and use extra caution when driving through the intersection. taken in Hawaii Baptist Academy by @hnl.completestreets

Today, September 22, is #WorldCarFreeDay!

Car Free Day encourages motorists around the world to give up their vehicles for a day, and aims to see what life would be like without cars on the road.

We understand that a lot of people rely on their personal vehicles to get around. However, we want to observe today as another way for you to get around and try out a new mode of transportation! Whether it's using #TheBus, #HNLSkyline, riding a bike or @gobikihi, or simply just walking, you might discover your new favorite way to get to where you need to be!

Try to go car free today or tomorrow, or next week, or next month. Maybe once a week or twice a month! Just try it, and see the benefits of not having to sit behind the wheel of your car.

It truly takes a village, but years of hard work, planning, and effort have paid off. The street murals around the crosswalks fronting our school are complete thanks to the tremendous amount of volunteers that came out this weekend and the tedious planning from so many.

Research shows that crosswalk murals significantly improve traffic safety, provide visual traffic calming, increase foot traffic, and provide community place making.

Our keiki studied the mo’olelo of Ka’elepulu to draw inspiration for this mural, and @laurenrothart helped us bring it to life.

Here’s to ALL the incredible hands that touched this project, and here’s to safer crossing for our keiki and community. taken in Keolu Drive + Akiohala Street by @hnl.completestreets

A new shared-use path is taking shape on Waipiʻo Point Access Road! 🚧

This community-initiated Complete Streets project is transforming Waipiʻo Point Access Road makai of Farrington Highway, along Waipahu High School and the Waipahu Aloha Clubhouse. These upgrades will create a safer, more accessible, and more comfortable route for students, residents, and community members.

We're excited to see construction progress and can't wait to see everyone enjoying the new paths and shade trees! 🌳🚶‍♀🚲
