A safer crossing for our Nuʻuanu community!

The new crosswalk at Nuʻuanu Avenue and Bates Street is officially complete! Thanks to community input and the City’s Complete Streets Program, these improvements will make it safer for students at Hawai‘i Baptist Academy and everyone who walks through the area to get to and from home, work, church, or for exercise.

The project also brings changes to the traffic pattern, so please slow down, stay alert and use extra caution when driving through the intersection.

It truly takes a village, but years of hard work, planning, and effort have paid off. The street murals around the crosswalks fronting our school are complete thanks to the tremendous amount of volunteers that came out this weekend and the tedious planning from so many.

Research shows that crosswalk murals significantly improve traffic safety, provide visual traffic calming, increase foot traffic, and provide community place making.

Our keiki studied the mo’olelo of Ka’elepulu to draw inspiration for this mural, and @laurenrothart helped us bring it to life.

Here’s to ALL the incredible hands that touched this project, and here’s to safer crossing for our keiki and community.

Change is coming for #makiki and wilder avenue, what are your thoughts on the changes, what would you like to see? Bike lanes, bigger sidewalks, and more are all on the table.

We're excited to announce that a new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB), has been installed along South King Street, in between Pāwaʻa Lane and Artesian Street. This pedestrian safety signal replaces the existing flashing crosswalk signal fronting Times Supermarket.

The previous crosswalk signal was installed in 2014 and experienced numerous operational issues over the past year, prompting the need for a more reliable pedestrian crossing treatment.

This new solar-powered RRFB allows pedestrians to activate the warning system by pressing a button when they are ready to cross. Once activated, bright, rapid flashing LED lights alert approaching drivers that a pedestrian is entering the crosswalk, increasing visibility and helping drivers recognize that they need to stop.

This installation supports the City’s ongoing commitment to Pedestrian Safety, Complete Streets, and Vision Zero initiatives, aimed at keeping everyone on Oʻahu’s roadways safe.

DTS reminds drivers to remain attentive, slow down when approaching pedestrian crossings, and watch for activated RRFBs. Pedestrians are also encouraged to use designated crosswalks and follow all pedestrian signals when crossing.
