Join us for an evening celebrating SWANA literature and counterarchives, with a very special panel featuring Matt Chun, Nunami Sculthorpe-Green and Ayda Issa.

Saturday October 21, 6pm
Hosted by TPAN and Hobiennale
37 Hunter Street, Nipaluna/Hobart

This combined launch celebrates TPAN’s new project, Dars Library & Archive, and the Nipaluna launch of Slingshot’s Books latest publication Forgotten Palestinian Cities by Anonymous. Copies of Forgotten Palestinian Cities will be available for purchase on the night.

Free event, registration required due to limited space. To register, see the link in our bio.

Accessibility: the space is wheelchair accessible.

About Forgotten Palestinian Cities:
For nine years, an anonymous Palestinian historian and artist has maintained the memory of the more than 400 Palestinian towns and villages ethnically cleansed during the Nakba. Through their meticulously colourised archival images and gently lyrical, informative texts, Anonymous offers a rare and precious glimpse into pre-Nakba life in Forgotten Palestinian Cities. This debut collection is an immersive and stunning visual record that vividly recalls a not-so-distant past.

If you can’t make the event, you can purchase a copy on @slingshotbooks website. taken in Nipaluna / Hobart by @hobiennale

✌️Up until 2 months ago, Feras Shaheen and Nadia Refaei have co-directed this iteration of Hobiennale. Working on the curatorial framework, applying for funding, connecting with artists locally and interstate, setting up the Hobi Hub, building the Hobiennale brand, engaging with students, and many more hats and tasks.

Like many other festivals and art orgs, our main challenge has been locking in funding to present our slow-burning festival model and our first cluster ‘Welcome the Blur’.

As we enter this new stage of delivering a weekend of exhibitions, performances, workshops and discussions - we have switched up our operating structure and team to adjust to a more demanding workload. Nadia will be stepping down as a co-director to allow herself to focus on her art practice, family, and her other roles as an artsworker. Feras will continue to direct Hobiennale and execute the curatorial framework they have built together into the first cluster and beyond..

We thank Nadia for her work, vision and commitment in bringing back Hobiennale to Nipaluna. You will still see her around… maybe with a 👶next time 👀

🏋️‍♀️Jumping on board is our new producer Chloe Tanner, who will be working alongside Feras to bring you Hobiennale.

Chloe is an experienced producer, curator and consultant with artistic roots. Originally a jazz musician, music programmer and festival all-rounder, she has worked for MONA, Dark Mofo, The Art Gallery of South Australia, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, WOMADelaide, Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM).

@chloectanner

👀We are still a 2 person team so if you would like to jump on board and volunteer, now is the time! Lots of exciting things are happening in the coming weeks. Visit our website and fill out the volunteer EOI!

Okay that is enough formalities and me writing about myself in third person. How do these art orgs keep doing it?!

Get excited for our first cluster!!!!!!!!!

LOCK IT IN! 🔒 29th October - 1st November 🔥

The line between “art practice” and other forms of collective or cultural practice is increasingly blurry. We welcome this blur and consider how the category of “art” itself — particularly in Western contexts — has been shaped by colonial, capitalist and exclusionary logics. We ask you to welcome the blur and join us for a concentrated weekend of exhibitions, performances, workshops and discussions with a powerful group of local and interstate artists.

⭐Program:

Thursday 29th Oct, 6pm at Hobi hub
•An opening event to gather and be Welcomed by @wuratji and to hear from the directors and festival artists.

Friday 30th Oct, 10pm at @thegrandpoobahbar (kissing room)
•A club event celebrating local QTBIPOC talent by @kikihouseofsilky with performances by @juhbahleee , House of Silky and special guests/artists - @rocky_stall0ne

Saturday 31st Oct (time & location tba)
•Vogue Workshop, Mini Ball and Effects Workshop by @gusta.mara and @lucie.ie.ie

Sunday 1st Nov, 10am at @abraham_mezzebar
•Artist talk by @ruebensucks and a kitchen table discussion with @xanderkhoury , Rueben Baartz, @maggie_percussion and @minminmarion

Sunday 1st Nov, 3pm at @rosnyfarm
•A sensual, embodied and expansive performance by @_______________searcher__ and closing reflections by Cody Gangell-Smith

🖼️Exhibitions

Dars (‘lesson’ in Arabic) is a lending library and archive centred on Palestinian, SWANA and anti-colonial literature, thought and practice based in Nipaluna/Hobart.

Dars exists as an example of a counterspace, a counterarchive. It affirms the need for knowledge bases that are unapologetically political, based in community and resistant to conventional narratives.

Dars is directly inspired by the work of Anna Emina – who generously provided the first books that began our growing library/archive – and her work with The Great Book Return in Naarm/Melbourne. Like The Great Book Return, Dars exists in a time where the active genocide of the Palestinian people extends beyond the loss of human life, the occupation of land and the devastation of infrastructure, and includes the active erasure of culture, knowledge and stories. Dars responds directly to this catastrophe by ensuring continued Palestinian existence and resistance, even on a small scale, even a world away.

Created and managed by the Tasmanian Palestine Advocacy Network. The current home of Dars is the Hobiennale Hub on Hunter Street, and will officially launch soon!

Donations and contributions are welcome and greatly appreciated. If you’re interested in supporting this project you can donate funds to help build the collection or fill out the donation form linked in our bio.

Work by @cedardeodar.studio is up at the hub for the next few weeks🔥

Altered Brink 2.0
2026, ceramics, recycled clay, slip, underglaze, glaze and reclaimed objects

Altered Brink 2.0 explores the swamp beneath our feet, where the scars of colonisation and industrialisation are ever-present. The work embodies the experience of living, loving and making, on and with the soft soil at the convergence of the three rivers in so called Invermay. Through walking and deep site observation, the borders between memory, emotion, animal, place, plant and human dissolve. Offering both a speculative future and past that seeks joy over climate anxiety.

About the artist:
‘I am a queer emerging artist based on the banks of the kanamaluka, lutruwita. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Tasmania in 2025. My practice seeks to embody radical joy and whimsy, considering the entanglement of human and non-human agents through the lens of the unfolding climate crisis.

Growing up on Bundjalung country in New South Wales allowed my deep appreciation for the environments I occupy to flourish. The flooding of the Wilson River in 2022 saw my hometown and community of Lismore devastated. The deep impact of this natural disaster is evident throughout my practice.’

“Hacker chain if you’ve never hacked anything, but have watched far too many films”
2026, mixed media

When make-work convenience of the Iron Age and onwards meets the world we live in now. Chatelaines, or key chains, evolved from and into work belts. Combining easy access with the necessary implements for living.

“It has pockets!”

Well what if it doesn’t? What if you’re running and have nowhere to stop? You might need food, a cuppa, a knife, a torch, a safety pin. You might have to eat on the bus, or work on a presentation on the ferry. Whistle for help in a forest, light a fire. The chains are infinitely adaptable. Like most of us find we need to be.
