POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It was an honour to launch Dars on Wednesday night alongside Slingshot Book’s latest publication, Forgotten Palestinian Cities by Anonymous – a courageous endeavor and a perfect example of history-keeping as active resistance and reclamation.

A huge thank you to Tess from Slingshot and panelists Nunami Sculthorpe-Green, Ayda Issa and Matt Chun for sharing so openly and generously. The conversations could have gone all night, and we would have been sat.

The discussion explored the power of oral histories as knowledge that can’t be reclassified or stolen and the role of counter archives, both the incidental and the deliberate. Alternative history-keeping is always happening and that what communities create now matters just as much as the objects institutions hold. Official archives may a source of history, but they are not the story. Like anything else, institutions and their archives are not neutral, and they must be read through their ideological and financial motivations. But community archives, like Dars, are how we make sure our histories and stories are told on our own terms.

Thank you Hobiennale for hosting and continuing to be the home of Dars for the next little while. The collection is now open for perusing and borrowing (see our pinned post for how to borrow).

And thank you to everyone who came along to listen and support this community project. We hope this is the beginning of many more conversations.

💛

Join us for an evening celebrating SWANA literature and counterarchives, with a very special panel featuring Matt Chun, Nunami Sculthorpe-Green and Ayda Issa!

Wednesday October 21, 6pm
Hosted by TPAN and Hobiennale
37 Hunter Street, Nipaluna/Hobart

This combined launch celebrates TPAN’s new project, Dars Library & Archive, and the Nipaluna launch of Slingshot Books’ latest publication Forgotten Palestinian Cities by Anonymous. Copies will be available for purchase on the night.

Free event, registration required due to limited space (link in bio)

Accessibility: the space is wheelchair accessible. There are no toilets available onsite (the closest public toilets are in the IXL courtyard, approx 140m from the venue).

About Forgotten Palestinian Cities:
For nine years, an anonymous Palestinian historian and artist has maintained the memory of the more than 400 Palestinian towns and villages ethnically cleansed during the Nakba. Through their meticulously colourised archival images and gently lyrical, informative texts, Anonymous offers a rare and precious glimpse into pre-Nakba life in Forgotten Palestinian Cities. This debut collection is an immersive and stunning visual record that vividly recalls a not-so-distant past.

If you can’t make the event, you can purchase a copy on @slingshotbooks website.

Introducing artist Danni McGrath who will be exhibiting in @counihangallery for @realjobexhibition from April, 2023.

Danni McGrath @d_e_mc is an artist and screen printer whose work is concerned with the potential socio-cultural value of mass produced printed items such as posters, flyers, zines, business cards, newsletters and merchandise. McGrath draws on her experiences working in a variety of commercial and non-profit print workshops to position print in a supporting role to other art forms, frequently working as a collaborator, printer, publisher, co-ordinator and service provider. In these activities labour becomes a key material of her work, on the same level as paper and ink.

Danni McGrath operates Original Copy Press @originalcopy.press, a printing service for artists that launched in 2020 with the Original Copy Print Delivery project. This was a subscription-based print project that saw the production and distribution of six new screen prints by artists based across Australia with the goal of generating income for artists and developing a non-gallery artwork distribution model.

McGrath has an Honours degree in Fine Art from Curtin University, Perth and has shown her work in gallery and alternative spaces throughout Australia. She is a part of the Artists’ Union @artists.union.au, a Melbourne-based group that researches working conditions and organising efforts in the arts industry. Her writing has been published in Un Magazine @un_projects and Art+Australia Online @artandaustralia.

Featured here is a video work from 2020 titled 𝘛𝘸𝘰 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘦, by Amalia Lindo. It is presented on a repurposed laptop screen, mounted onto a bent tube sculpture referencing computer networking diagrammatics.

The video was first shown alongside Trent Crawford with c3 Contemporary Art Space at 𝘏𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘦, Hobart in 2019, featuring an accompanying soundtrack by Mitchell Mack.

It was shown again in 2020 at RMIT Gallery in the exhibition 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬, curated by Alison Bennett, Shane Hulbert, Rebecca Najdowski & Daniel Palmer, which was part of the Photo Festival 2020-21. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the show wasn't open to the public and was transformed into a digital exhibition.

"Technological infrastructure, as well as the patterns that emerge through user-generated content and its technical circulation, are mobilised in Two Marionettes Collide (2020), an adaptive video installation by Melbourne-based artist Amalia Lindo. The artist worked with data scientist Tim Lynam to develop algorithms that both compile video clips uploaded to YouTube and also perform some of the editing and reassembling of the final video piece... Using keywords, dates, and geographical locations of user-generated content, Lindo was able to see patterns of technology-use emerge from the incessant flow." - Rebecca Najdowski

𝘛𝘸𝘰 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘦 is on display in our current exhibition 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 until the 25th of June. Stop by the gallery on Fridays or Saturdays from 12-5 for a rare chance to view this work in person, or email us to request a link to view it on Vimeo.

We start the year with a tear in our eye saying goodbye to Tyler Jackson, the last founding member of play_station. Tyler’s been running the space since it’s inception in 2016, running exhibitions, events and performance programmes tirelessly and always with enthusiasm!! Words and pics can’t describe the amount of time and effort he’s given to our community and the artists who have come through our space. We love you TJ 💛💛 and can’t wait to see what you’ve got planned to do next!! (might keep borrowing your drill kit hope that’s ok)

In 2019, I volunteered to write the Sustainability Guide for @hobiennale. In 2020, I volunteered to write alongside @pirrinangharad for India Kenning’s exhibition. And in 2021, you can have it all bundled up, in one neat little package, as part of my fundraising and volunteer work with @constance_ari. It’s humbling to have things come together. 🥰

Visit constancecache.org/to get your hands on this mystery book bag, as well as some incredible local art works.
