I’ve been writing a newsletter for four months and I’m just now mentally prepared to grid post about it! 🌝
I made an arbitrary goal to write consistently for four months, then see how I felt about it. I feel…proud that I followed through with it?! And motivated to keep going, as it’s been really helpful and meaningful as a writing practice. If you’re curious, this is a small collection of the kind of topics I’ve been writing about. “Outfits and Anxiety” is a mix of one of my favorite creative expressions (fashion) and the gallows humor, personal essay perspective of my anxious mind. Happy immigration day to my Mom and family!

65 years ago today, my Abuela and the Abuelo I never knew made the heart wrenching decision to escape Cuba, the only home they knew. They were able to seek political asylum through a series of lies, false passports, working in the airline industry, the Red Scare working in their favor, and luck. Every year I use the day to reflect on all the circumstances that led to me being born, to being raised in the U.S., my dad being American, etc. etc.

Today is always a little emotional but this year it’s an explosion of feelings. Immigrants, our friends our neighbors, are being violently wrenched off the streets and their homes. People are getting killed by ICE agents. You can talk about all the BS of politics and immigration policy all you want, but the bottom line is the immigrants of today want the same thing my own family wanted. A better life for themselves and their loved ones, more opportunities in a country that’s supposed to be a place where anything is possible. My heart is absolutely aching. What hurts even more is the dissonance of people who rationalize they were immigrants who did it the ‘right’ way versus those that do it ‘wrong.’ I don’t know what to say except to express how angry and sad I am, while also so grateful the circumstances of history and geopolitics allowed my own family to be here today. by @holanatalie
