The fate of human conversion into a resource is reflected in Leah Ying Lin’s Fatalist (2023). The formidable allure of her glistening organic sculpture beckons to the biomorphic tension it evokes through its spinal form. Lin applies a metaphysical lens to her work, submitting herself to the digital, and she is willing to evolve with the culture. She approaches the potential death of the human with reverence, embracing the digital life that enables continued flourishing. Lin has accepted fate.

In N3O_iD011z, She has chosen to be reborn into a different being who accepts digitality, as she has accepted the world’s fate.

@playtime_lyl is a multidisciplinary artist who creates sculptural forms through metallic ceramics, metal, glass, and performance. Her kinetic works invoke obsession and displacement, revealing tensions embedded in contemporary culture.

As a new cultural aesthetic, digital culture has kindled religious relationships with its users. @vivmoe brat trinity (2024) emphasizes the faithful ideologue that is the internet. Moe combines traditional aesthetics with meme culture. The hyper-real oil painting recalls pop-culture references as a means of idolization. In this instance, the idolization of Britney Spears and other “pop-brats” reveals a religious admiration of influencer media.

In N3O_iD011z, the exhibition signals that our current society is spiritually different from traditional models. Today, the site of martyrdom is digitality. Devotees either adapt their religious inheritance to the digital or seek digital means for happiness, creating a recurring cycle of new idols such as Moe’s “brats.”

Contemporary digital culture has produced emergent structures that parallel, and in some cases displace, traditional systems of religious meaning-making. The screen, a new central site of devotion, has become the place in which existence is directed by the parasocial digital idols who establish aesthetic, ethical, and behavioral scripts for others to inhabit. The very act of posting has become a liturgical ritual that is akin to acts of affirmation and organized religion. Yet, unlike institutional religion, this techno-theology collapses the distinction between worshiper and worshiped: to be online is to occupy both roles simultaneously. In offering oneself to a dispersed and anonymous congregation, the user enacts a form of devotional performance structured by visibility and response. Aptly titled N3O_iD011z, (Neo-Idols), the artists in the exhibition gesture towards this emergent condition, positioning the digital image as a vessel for devotion, dependence and eventual disillusionment.
