'I don’t really care how I’m remembered. But we have the Worldwide Web now, we have Youtube and all that and now and for the longest time people are gonna be able to say: ‘if you want to see the sickest boxing highlights ever, you have to look up Roy Jones Jr.'

That does it for me. That’s good enough. That’s it. Because those are facts. That’s something you can’t make up. Ain’t nobody who can re-duplicate it or change it … you can’t go Photoshop it. No. It is what it is. You can say whatever you wanna say but if you wanna see the sickest highlights from boxing ever you’ve got to go watch Roy Jones Jr. It’s simple. Can you even pretend there’s ever been people close to as good as that?'

'Trainers get in the business because they love it. I'm speaking for myself, but I'm sure I'm speaking for a lot of trainers. In my case and in my brother Pat's case, after we opened the gym in 1969, what we did was work all day in construction, wipe the sweat off our hands, then come down the gym at seven o'clock with the fighters. Not that I expected to get a world's champion like Marvin Hagler. That was far from my mind. I did it to get these kids in from the streets and use my expertise to teach 'em how to fight.'

'The boxing writers would talk about the glee I showed when I took apart a guy. Why not? I came into the fight game marked down as damaged merchandise, as too small to operate against the big guys. Well, let me tell you; there wasn't a feeling much better than seeing the look in that big guy's eyes when I'd unload on them.'

'The local kids ways told me I was going to be nothing and that I couldn't do anything. I was the kid who cried. I was the kid who was very sensitive and all the other kids would talk about me and poke fun. They would talk about my clothes and they would talk about my momma. They used to make me so mad that all I wanted to do was fight everybody.'

'There's hardly a single lesson I've learned in life that didn't come the hard way. So I know that life can sometimes seem like a big hole, and that you have to be pulled up out of it from time to time.'

On this day back in 1980 Marvelous Marvin Hagler won the world middleweight title when he defeated Alan Minter by 3rd round TKO.
.
.
Sadly the celebrations were cut short when the british fans started throwing bottles and cans at Hagler and his team a very sad night for british boxing.

'I had no self-esteem, none at all. There was not a person anywhere who was not better than me, in my mind. I was desperate to be taken apart, helped...shown something.

Cus became like a father to me. He made me feel I mattered. Maybe he did that for Mike Tyson, too. I loved Cus. He really was like a dad.

I put all my trust in him. He'd say something at a press conference, and I'd say, 'That's my answer too.' He'd put something in front of me, I'd sign it. Total trust.'

'I feel I was born to fight, because I have no other interest in anything else. Anybody’s a fighter in their own right. You’re a fighter, I’m a fighter, everyone that’s in this room, even the newspapermen, they’re fighters. But everybody don’t get up every morning and run, everybody don’t go to the gym every morning. And everybody don’t have enough discipline to wait in the locker room for two hours or three hours, then go in the ring and do what they’ve been taught all those years in the gym. So, that’s what separates a champion from a mediocre fighter.'
