Harvest day has finally arrived!!! It was so exciting to enjoy our very own home grown tomatoes this week! by @homemadebydaniela

This is one of the ways I keep us eating wholesome food on a budget!! Aldi has the best prices for meat in my area, and sometimes I even can get a bunch for 50% off!! This is because they have expiration dates for tomorrow. But I just prep them like this and throw them in the freezer!! Since I have so much meat some of them just went in without marinade as well.

Here is one of my favorite marinades!

Mexican-style marinade

Marinate 3 chicken breasts for 30 mins, then put flat in freezer.

¼ cup olive oil
¼ cup honey
¼ cup lime or lemon juice
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
½ tsp paprika
¼ tsp cumin
Optional: add chili powder or chili flakes if you like spicy by @homemadebydaniela

2 of our tomatoes finally started to ripen! My daughter picked them both and they disappeared before I could eat one🤣🤣🤣 by @homemadebydaniela

I had a bunch of sourdough bread that got stale (shocker right??) so I decided to make a breakfast strata. I had never heard of this until I sold sourdough bread and I had a customer who wanted to buy loaves presliced to specifically make strata.
However, I believe it’s traditionally a way to repurpose stale bread!!

Recipe:
3/4 of a loaf of bread (preferably a few days old!)
20-24 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 Cup Cheddar cheese
1 pack Bacon (cooked)
Spinach (I used frozen, defrosted by spraying water on it)
Salt
Garlic powder

Preheat oven to 350.
Oil a 9x13 pan. Chop up stale bread into bite size chunks. In a bowl, crack your eggs and scramble. Add milk, salt and garlic powder (add other seasonings as desired). Add cooked spinach (mine was frozen). Pour into pan and sprinkle cheese and bacon crumbles on top. Bake at 350 degrees F for about 30-40 mins. Poke with a knife in the middle to check if it’s done. When it’s firm and the knife comes out clean it’s ready! Makes about 10 servings. by @homemadebydaniela

These lessons are maybe more of a reminder for myself than anyone else but I hope that it resonates with you too!! by @homemadebydaniela

Starting solids for my 6 month old the ancestral way!! Recipe and info about this method is from @wildnutritionist! Recipe: 1-2lbs gelatinous cut of meat (beef oxtail, marrow bone, shank, chicken feet) 2 qt filtered water 1 tsp salt. Add to a Dutch oven, bring to boil then turn to low. Simmer for 4-5 hours until meat falls off the bone. Remove meat+bone and save. Strain liquid into a jar and serve or refrigerate. Can be served hot or cold to baby! You can also give them the meat as well. by @homemadebydaniela

Grocery haul for a family of 3 plus a baby! He is just about to start solids so I’m not counting him😂 Although I eat for him because I’m breastfeeding. This is our breakdown of how much we spent so far. I’m hoping to keep our final total for the month around $650.

Sam’s Club: $123
Aldi: $253.80
Expected purchases for the rest of the month:
A month’s worth of local pasture raised eggs and raw grassfed milk: $ 104 (4 dozen eggs and a gallon of raw milk a week)

$469 total so far. Hoping to stay around $650-700 for the month while still prioritizing high quality whole foods when possible. I’ll keep you posted on how the rest of the month goes! by @homemadebydaniela

It was time to build up some tomato cages for my fast growing tomatoes!!! I got these off of amazon and they work pretty well so far. I’ve had the first level of the cages in for a few weeks now and they have stayed put through a summer storm or two. Let me know if you want a link! by @homemadebydaniela

2 more days left until we get paid…. I made bread this weekend to help stretch our meals!! Homemade bread is one of the cheapest things you can make at home to replace store bought. I make sourdough but you can always use active dry yeast if that’s easier for you. Artisan Sourdough Loaf recipe:
Makes 1 medium size loaf.

Ingredients:
355 g warm water
50 g active starter
500 g flour
9 g salt

First add the starter to a medium size mixing bowl.
Then add the warm water and stir together.
Add the flour and then salt.
Mix dough until ingredients are mixed together in a shaggy dough. It won’t be smooth yet.
Cover bowl 30 mins

After 30 mins, perform stretch and folds.
To do this, use your hand to pull up one edge of the dough, then fold it into the middle. Make your way around the dough in a circle until it’s all been stretched and folded about 2 times.

If you have time you can do more stretches and folds every 30 mins for the next 2 hours. This is not necessary but adds more structure to your dough and makes your sourdough even better.

Cover bowl again and let it rest for a total of about 7 hours. Cover with Saran Wrap or a damp towel with a plate on top to prevent the dough from drying out.

After the dough has rested for about 5-7 hours, take a look at it and do some more stretch and folds to see what the texture is like. If the dough has stopped being super sticky and is no longer sticking to the sides of the bowl a lot then it is done proofing. by @homemadebydaniela

Garden update: June 18th 2026!
It’s hot and humid but the plants are growing for the most part. My strawberry plants are thriving and producing more berries which is exciting!! Waiting for everything else to start producing. by @homemadebydaniela

I’m doing a no spend challenge for 2 weeks where I’m not going back to the grocery store until after our next payday…. Will I make it until then or will I break down and go buy something?? I’m not going to count my weekly local egg and milk pickup because it’s not from the grocery store! I have a ton of food in my freezer, pantry, and fridge so I know it’s possible. Let me know your tips for lasting more than a week without going to the store!! High protein Cowboy caviar (credit to @whatthemags for recipe)

Dressing
3 tbsp olive oil
3 tbsp red wine vinegar
1 tbsp honey
Juice of 1 lime
3/4 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp garlic powder

1 Persian cucumber
2 cans beans rinsed
6 oz feta cheese
