Welcome to the Booker Shortlist!!

Announced yesterday, these are the six books now in the running for the Booker Prize. If you don’t know where to start with them, I hope this flowchart helps you navigate the selection!!

At the core of these novels is identity and the forces that shape it, transporting readers across decades and the globe in the pursuit of defining what it means to be human.

Personally, I am super intrigued by this shortlist!! I had only read three of the longlist, and two of those have made it to the shortlist which is exciting!! I must admit that I have been incredibly interested in ‘The Renovation’ by Kenan Orhan, which did not make it to the shortlist, but I still cannot wait to pick it up. Out of the shortlist that I have not read, I am most looking forward to reading Marlon James’ ‘The Disappearers.’

Let me know what book this flowchart leads you to!!

Welcome to my new symbol series!! Starting with the historically emblematic pomegranate!! 🫀

I have always been really interested in symbols, and I am so fascinated by how different concepts become distinct tokens based on history, politics, religion, social attitudes etc. One of the best parts of literary analysis is picking up on, and then picking apart, all of these items and icons that at first may feel really mundane! They connect ancient stories to ones of the present, and honestly navigating them all can feel a bit convoluted! Hence this series, something I would’ve appreciated during my studies, in which I will unpack symbols and tokens so that they’re easier to spot in your next read!!

Of course the pomegranate had to be the first in this series!! It is one of my favourite symbols of all time, being part of so many iconic stories and being so rich in its imagery. There’s even more to say than what this post contains, and I would love for you to give me your favourite pomegranate lore in the comments!! ❤️ by @honisreading

I can guess your next read!! AKA books that people always buy together!! 🐝

Okay…maybe ‘always’ is a bit hyperbolic, but these are book pairings that are incredibly popular and often coming through the till together!!

I must confess I have not read many of these myself, so could not comment on their quality, but I have noticed their popularity and cohesion as pairs among many customers!!

I would love to make this a series, as my favourite part of my job is getting to share in people’s great book loves, so please do comment any book pairings you recommend (and why) and I will include them in the next one! 😁 by @honisreading

Goodbye September, hello October!! 🎃

My September reading wrapped! It hasn’t been a particularly voluminous month book wise, but I am pleased nonetheless as I enjoyed all three reads! This year it is finally time I read Carmilla in October, watch this space this time next month to see if I stick to my goal!

What have been your favourite reads of September? 🫵🏻

The reading list inside your novel!!

NEW SERIES ALERT 🚨
Reading is political. Reading is fundamental. Reading important theory alongside fiction enhances your worldview.

I do not claim to be an expert, but reading intentionally and pairing theory with fiction in this way has undoubtedly expanded my breadth of knowledge, taught me vital lessons about creating a better society, and certainly empowered my own personal politics. This is a journey that is lifelong! Nobody has all the answers, but in this series I aim to give you key places to start from. This is a short list to start with, but I will be building on it as the series goes on!

I would LOVE to hear from as many people as possible about their own theory & fiction pairings. Like I said, this is a continuous endeavour and I am so keen to take recommendations!!

solar system book tag!!☀️

I was not tagged, but I saw @reading.rats do a beautiful version of this a while ago, and I really wanted to join in!!

I had to change the original ‘brings me joy’ for the sun, as I cannot think of a joyful book that I have read recently, they’ve all been a bit macabre (my fav) lately!!

I would love to redo this tag in a years time, to see if anything changes 🤭

Are any of these books in your literary universe? 🫵🏻 by @honisreading

a legacy that will never die 🩷

Dolly’s impact in music, philanthropy, and art will outlive us all; her commitment to queer rights, children’s literacy, women’s empowerment, and of course music, will continue to inspire generations. She has taught the world to stand up for what they believe in, and strive for love and kindness everywhere.

The world suddenly feels less sparkly.

WHO DECIDES WHAT HISTORY GETS REMEMBERED? (AKA my review of Rebecca Perry’s Booker Longlisted ‘May We Feed the King’) 👑

This was a really easy book to read, with enchanting and precise chapters that made it difficult to put the book down. I don’t know that I would read it again, or that it is my Booker favourite thus far (it being my first), but it is a really strong debut by a talented and profound writer.

It asks really intriguing questions about history and its preservation. I am particularly fond of how it explores how our emotions today feel new, but have actually been felt infinite times over by people in worlds temporally and socially different to our own. Perry reflects on how we are connected to the past in an original and insightful way, and I can see why it has been nominated for the Booker, especially with historian Mary Beard as the chair of judges for 2026.

My bookshop literary tour of Bath!! 🐝

I have had the most wonderful few days away in this gorgeous town, and I have come home with five new books to show for it (as well as lots of pics).

The indie bookstores in Bath are genuinely incredible - each one is impossible to leave without a book in hand, as the booksellers are so lovely and knowledgable, and the stores themselves so vastly filled with varied books. I recommend Bath to any book lover, especially when also thinking about the Jane Austen and Frankenstein museum!! A must-see city for literary fans!!

Do you find the Booker Prize to be intimidating, confusing, and a little bit pretentious?? If so, here is an easy rundown for this year’s longlist in under 5 minutes!! 🐝

I love Booker season!! I particularly love this year’s judging panel, especially Mary Beard as the Chair of Judges.

I’ve had my eye on Black Bag for a while now, so it being nominated is super exciting!!

I also thought a Pulp song would be appropriate, as Jarvis Cocker is a judge!

Let me know which of the Booker nominations you’re most excited for!!! 😁 taken in BOOKSTA by @honisreading
