Rijeka Tunnel
One way to keep cool during the heat wave is to visit the tunnels built by the Italian Royal Army where your grandfather took shelter from Allied air raids during WWII.

He worked at the docks for about six months toward the end of the war in 1945. Whenever the English bombers came, everyone would run like hell for the tunnels. There were always a few people who were too curious to take cover and would stand at the entrance, watching the bombs fall and the fires engulf the ships and docks.

German soldiers would use the backs of their rifles to shove people away from the entrances and clear the way. After an hour or so, the all-clear siren would sound, and everyone would go back to work.
