Alaskan fishing trip of a lifetime.

My brother-in-law Trey and I headed to remote Alaska with our Uncle Clancy for a fly-fishing trip on the Hoodoo River.

We went up there chasing silver salmon and ended up getting into some solid rainbow trout and Dolly Varden too.

We met some new friends along the way, had awesome guides, and the whole crew took great care of us from start to finish.

Hard to beat a week fishing in a place like this.

More photos to come, but here are a few of the fish and our new friends from the trip. taken in Hoodoo Lodge Alaska by @hoodoolodge

Back from another dreamt trip to @hoodoolodge Sapsuk River, on the Aleutian Peninsula, Alaska.

Autumn here is something special. Nature puts on its last and most glorious show before winter lands hard on a coast so exposed to the North Pacific and the Bering Sea.

The adventure calls louder than the fishing itself. Every day promises something deeper than just catching fish, and Hoodoo delivered on that promise in a way I won’t forget.

Stay tuned, more about the trip coming soon in our blog.

What if we dreamed of the perfect steelhead experience?

The @hoodoolodge Sandy River delivers something that goes far beyond some of the finest swung-fly fishing for wild steelhead. There is something deeply moving about experiencing a place that takes you back to the old days—the ones we have heard and read so much about, when rivers were still wild, fish were abundant and every cast carried a genuine sense of possibility.
It’s a rare glimpse into the steelhead fishing we have always dreamed about.

Quality over quantity describes it best. There are many reasons why steelhead are so special, but their unique life-history strategies are a major reason why they appeal to anglers and scientists alike. We're excited to see both combine in an Angler-Science model to increase awareness regarding the diversity and resilience of these unique wild fish. #itsallabouttheexperience #wildsteelhead by @hoodoolodge

The Alaska Steelhead Project: Aleutian Angler-Science

Following the release of the Alaska Steelhead Project video, Guideline, Wildman Lodge, and Hoodoo Lodge, in partnership with The Conservation Angler, are formalizing the Aleutian Angler-Science Project.

Scientific data for both wild steelhead and Chinook salmon on the Alaska Peninsula is remarkably sparse. Both species remain poorly studied in these remote watersheds, leaving critical gaps in our understanding of their population dynamics. To address this, we are deploying an Angler-Science model that transforms recreational access into a high-resolution data collection effort.

This summer, professional lodge guides will undergo training in specialized handling and standardized field-sampling protocols. This ensures that every fish is processed safely and with scientific rigor. Our field teams will identify sex, record precise length and weight measurements, and collect scale and DNA samples.

The primary objectives of this project are to:
* Establish a scientific baseline for these understudied populations.
* Contribute findings to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) to support state-level management and conservation.
* Increase angler awareness regarding the unique life-history diversity and resilience of Peninsula fish.

By adhering to rigorous scientific standards and sharing our data with management agencies, we are ensuring the long-term health of these world-class wild runs through evidence-based conservation. by @hoodoolodge

The Alaska Steelhead Project video is now live. Watch at the link in the @guidelineusa bio or on the @guidelineflyfish YouTube page!

Steelhead are a mirror of the wild places they inhabit. This is what led us to Alaska, in the remote Aleutian Range, with a goal not only to catch, but also to understand and experience. Some steelhead runs in this area are known, while others remain completely unexplored. We were lucky enough to spend time on both through traveling between @wildmanlodge, @hoodoolodge, and by small bush plane in the surrounding areas. Still, the desire to know and protect more remained.

Enter @theconservationangler and the “Aleutian Angler-Science Project,” born from the belief that telling stories with intention can do more than inspire; that every cast can mean more than a catch; that we, anglers, can become the eyes and ears of conservation. Because in the end, we only fight for what we truly understand. #itsallabouttheexperience #wildsteelhead #flyfishing by @hoodoolodge

Variety is the spice of life and the Aleutians are full of it. Some rivers have known runs of wild steelhead and some are waiting to be explored.

We got to sample a good bit of each in the making of The Alaska Steelhead Project, live this afternoon at 3pm EST. Tune in to see more! #itsallabouttheexperience #wildsteelhead #flyfishing #speycasting by @hoodoolodge
