I’ve always had a strong pull toward Gerhard Richter’s ā€œZwei Kerzenā€ (Two Candles).

In 2021, Annie and I spent an entire summer in Berlin. I was retracing my parents’ path. Two artists who had met in a German bar, my 23 year old father in white leather lederhosen buying Jägermeister for the group and my 29 year old mom, who fell for this strange character. A year and some travels later, they decided to move to Berlin. The wall had just fallen, and the city was in utter artistic chaos. They squatted in abandoned buildings until they realized my mom was pregnant with me. A legal marriage allowed them to find an apartment in the east, and shortly after, they brought me into the world in the Urban Krankenhaus am Landwehrkanal. My mom couldn’t speak German, my dad hardly spoke English. I’d never been back to Berlin with either of my parents again, so I took myself. I wanted to see the apartment in Friedrichshain, the one I’d spent my first 9 months in.

Near Brandenburger Tor, there is a small cultural room called ā€œRaum der Stilleā€ (Room of Silence). They had a retrospective on Gerhard’s work. Framed panels of photographs, and one of them of all the candle arrangements for Zwei Kerzen.

I’ve always loved this painting for its ephemeral substance. A photograph of a burning candle, the decision to paint a fleeting object, the process of painting it, which captured that flame. A moment held in time forever. A candle that will never stop burning.

This exhibition has stuck with me forever. The small white room directly off the bustling square. The squeezing through loud into quiet. A room without a designated ideology, showing Gerhard Richter, who moved from socialist murals to soft flame. The importance of designated spaces for experience.

It’s overcast and slightly rainy. I’m in my home in Tivoli, miles from where this memory formed. I’ve lit a candle. I’ve come down with a cold, and it’s the first time I’ve been sick in two years. My flame is a bit low, and in that state, I feel Heimweh for Berlin. Today, I share this candle with you. by @hook.haus

We’re so excited to see Haram Haram (@haramharamstudio) in print in Hospitality Design (@hospitalitydesign). Our first time in print! It is an honor to be part of their July Wellness Issue, in the Be Well section. In the wide landscape of design, we continue to center environmental health within our practice. Creating holistic spaces that benefit the health of the people in them is a deep focus of ours. Beyond aesthetics, we consider indoor air quality, material health, and the full supply chain of everything we specify. With a WELL accredited professional on our team and a background in designing healthcare spaces, we treat wellness as the center of our projects and not an afterthought. Link in bio to read the article.

Thank you Stephanie Chen for including us, and Alia Akkam (@behdria)and Caitlin St John (@crstjohn) for capturing our intent so accurately. by @hook.haus

Tania Alvarez’s (@taniaalvarezart) beautiful work in Hole in The Wall, a group show curated by @sylvi__uhhh of @livingroom______ in Kingston, NY. Not only is Tania an absolute dearest friend of mine but also a true inspiration. I love her work and I particularly am enamored with the window and doorway on striped fabric, a collage of intricate painted details, and a piece of wood from the inner framing of the walls of her home. by @hook.haus

ā€œThis tattoo parlour and art space in Miami’s Little River has been designed by US-based studio Chimera Design to reference sand dunes and Bedouin tents.ā€

We are endlessly honored for Haram Haram, a project so close to our hearts, to be featured in Dezeen. Thank you to Ben Dreith for sharing our story, and to Dan Howarth for so beautifully putting it into words.

After moving to Miami from NYC, our close friend @natashia.ink expressed her plan to open her own tattoo studio in Little River. We came on as designers, confidants, and dreamers to imagine a space that could expand the notion of what a tattoo studio might be.

The name of the studio, Haram Haram, draws from the Arabic word haram, which can mean both ā€œforbiddenā€ and ā€œsacred.ā€ During a time of deep uncertainty for her homeland, we worked closely to envision a sanctuary for gathering that reflected Natashia’s Lebanese roots. Though we had been friends for years, this design process allowed us to enter her world more deeply than ever before.

We looked through years of photographs from her travels, watched films, and listened to her stories. Our concept phase is always deeply investigative; in what can sometimes feel like a therapeutic process, we pull from memories and projections to create spaces rooted in the past while supporting the future. Deep pomegranate tones and rich natural textures wove their way into an environment where community can gather and feel reflected. The space includes a retail component, a lounge, multiple tattoo stations, back-of-house functions, and, most recently, a DJ booth for a future radio show.

With immense pride, we witnessed Natashia and her partner Bryan Perez @bryan_builds_ , a Miami-based fabricator, build the space together. Ideas slowly became reality as they poured themselves into every part of it with intense determination and creativity.

It was an honor to help bring Natashia’s world to life, and for it to become the first official project our studio has shared. Huge thank you to the talented @jeannnes for capturing the space just as we see it.

Over the next few posts, we will share more details of each area. taken in Little River, Miami by @hook.haus

Few things have been more certain to me than the importance of deep creative collaboration and mutual respect for one another’s process. It has taken years of dedication and an unwillingness to deviate from a life filled with artistic wonder.

My parents are designers and artists, and we bounced back and forth between the US and Germany in a chaotic, enthralling way before I landed at Parsons in Paris and then RISD to study Interior Architecture. While there I wanted to see more of what everyone was working on. I started throwing art ā€œHarvestsā€ in my apartment, inviting everyone to show their work. The school got wind of it and asked if I wanted to run our student gallery, Exposé. Two beautiful years of tending to a space, throwing openings, and seeing everyone’s work followed.

I was building the beginnings of my career in Interiors at the same time, and that is where I met Amanda. We became allies and confidants, aligned in the way we challenged and nurtured each other’s creativity. We made a pact to start a firm one day, and a decade later, almost to the day we graduated, we did.

In the two years since launching Chimera, we have been building quietly. Projects take time, the same way defining your creative voice does, and we have always been fine working on our own clock. Our work together is rooted in play and we fill our spaces with our peers’ pieces. While nurturing our friendship and our firm, we branched out and joined other endeavors that flex the creative processes we love.

In a full-circle moment, and a continuation of work I began 15 years ago, I joined Show: Room last December. I love seeing so many passionate and unique perspectives and hearing the depth of thought behind the work. Curating and communicating it to the public feels like a precious gift. This thread continues as an integral way of relating to and interpreting the world around me.

Earlier this month I wanted to bridge the gap between artist and work, and work and viewer. Drawn Here is the result, an audio exploration where artists speak directly to their work and process.

Here I am with Amanda. Together we are Chimera, in TIWA Select’s space, which I love so much, at Show: Room. by @hook.haus

Tattooing is an inherently intimate and vulnerable experience, and the environment plays a critical role in shaping how the body and mind respond. To accommodate a range of comfort levels, we enveloped each station, creating protected, calm, and private spaces, ā€˜portals’ enclosed by translucent drapery.

Layers of earthen materials and soft light guide clients from their arrival at the studio to more intimate zones. At Haram Haram, the experience extends beyond the visual: candlelight, incense, tea, music, and storytelling contribute to a sensorial environment that feels both transportive and deeply personal. By balancing precision with warmth, and hygiene with atmosphere, the space supports both Natashia’s craft and the wellbeing of every client and visitor. by @hook.haus
