States Recap Post!!

Tldr: Did just enough to be a state champion in an extremely exciting day!

Shoutouts: @systematic_strength for coaching and programming, @buildingbia @joeybliftsheavy for handling relatively last minute and for making sure I was taken care of throughout the day, @yang.gainz and @albertsonslifts for bringing the competition (I wanted the pressure of needing to hit lifts for placing and they definitely gave me a battle with their execution), everyone involved with @usaplny for making this meet happen

Lifts
Squat: 262.5 for a +10kg meet PR. Briefly thought about scratching my 3rd after an unexpectedly very difficult 2nd attempt. Celeste convinced me however that I had a little more in the tank if I locked in and with @hans.kgs screaming “How badly do you want it?!” in my ear nonstop for a minute before my attempt, I was able to muster up enough adrenaline for a 3.58 second grind (yes, I zoomed in to the 100th millisecond in the video to calculate).

Bench: 147.5 on my 2nd, missed 152.5 on my 3rd. Disappointed with top end output on the day, but it’s also on me to execute better. I’ll blow bench up once the pec and shoulder completely heals enough for me to push volume again.

Deadlift: 287.5 on my 3rd attempt to chip into 1st place with a good bit more in the tank. First ever “pull for the win” moment in my comp journey which was very cool! Not disappointed with the lack of PR at all because my primary goals this meet were to 1) hit my 3rd attempts and 2) win my weight class explicitly because I was successful in achieving goal #1. I do not care if the number to achieve said goals was 287.5 vs 307.5 because I have full confidence in my ability for both scenarios.

Learning lessons: a decent amount haha. Will probably make a separate post on that later.

Nonetheless, onwards and upwards! Always grateful to be able to train and compete as both are immense privileges to not take for granted. by @hookgrip9723

Some would claim that I’m a mid-rep stat padder……. and that’d be a pretty fair assessment. by @hookgrip9723

260/573x2 squat, 245/540x5 deadlift.

Started the block with technical yips on deadlift, ended the block with a huge doubles PR on squat and a “just never loaded it before” x5 PR on deadlift.

Thank you for the spots @nuccipowerlifting @agentsully83 I was nervous af on squats lol by @hookgrip9723

Don’t need spotters when you know you won’t fail (I was scared shitless before unracking). Nice little triple pr. The goal is to make this opener weight eventually by @hookgrip9723

255/562x2 squat and 280/618x2 deadlift.

Swear to god I’ve never had a block before where strength output was this high while externals out of my control were this bad. by @hookgrip9723

PA States tldr: felt strong, but barely came short of my goal raw nats qt of 707.5 (252.5/150/290, 692.5 instead). Huge thanks to @systematic_strength for coaching and programming, @nuccipowerlifting for being a great handler(would highly recommend him), and every volunteer for this meet.

Squats: oh boy, get your popcorn ready. Felt incredibly strong on all my attempts. Opener flew, then 250 second attempt got 2-1 red lighted from the sides for depth despite going the same depth as my opener(?) Went conservative with 252.5 to not risk losing too much on my total, buried + smoked it, and still almost got 2-1 red lighted for depth. Maybe I can be more aggressive going up in future meets knowing what I know now? From a technical standpoint going forward for squats, I will change… absolutely nothing at all. That was a bad call on my 2nd that costed me 5-7.5 keys on my total

Bench: felt meh on warmups, then progressively stronger with each attempt. 155 on my 3rd got overturned by jury for not covering the rings 😭. I completely agree with the jury’s decision after reviewing footage and actually think that was a great catch. What I am disappointed about however is… why did I then even get a start command? Isn’t it in the rulebook that I should be told to rerack andvre-setup if the rings aren’t covered? Imo, 155 would’ve been comfortable even if I needed to take 20-30 seconds to set up again. This error costed me another 5keys. Going forward, I’ll move my grip in a smidge and just be more vigilant about the rings

Deadlift: not much to say. Felt as strong as I ever did on meet day. 1st and 2nd moved well. 305 for my 3rd was just a kilo too much 🥲. Still proud of the effort as I left it all out on the platform. Just gimme a few more months of good training and it’ll be a grindy, but completable lift.

Very happy with how strong I felt and the progress that’s been made. Just a teeny bit better execution, and frankly, better luck with calls should have me adding to my total by quite a bit by @hookgrip9723

Unlocked another blue on squats to cap off the block. 2025 will be the year where all 3 blues are unlocked, fate willing.

Also hit minor bench and deadlift prs, but they’re not as impressive by @hookgrip9723

End of block highlights: 255x1 squat (Hitting 255 8 weeks out vs only 1 week out like last meet prep is promising), 142.5x3 bench, 262.5x3 deadlifts.

First block in a WHILE where both squat and deadlift clicked end of block. Big props to @systematic_strength for constantly troubleshooting. by @hookgrip9723
