What a fascinating visit to the UMD Letterpress Studio and Special Collections at @hornbakelibrary ! 📚✨
From rare books in Spanish, German, Italian, Persian, and French to an early edition of Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopédie, a 17th-century edition of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, beautifully illustrated manuscripts, and a multilingual collection of Le Petit Prince, our students explored centuries of history, language, and the art of the book. They even got to try their hand at printing on a traditional letterpress!

What does it mean to “keep Maryland weird”?

The mini-exhibition "Keep Maryland Weird" on view in the Hornbake Lobby and Welcome Desk foyer explores what it means to remember Maryland through the lens of the “weird.” To be weird is not bad. In fact, according to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the word “weird” originated in the 1400s as the “power to control fate.”

With items from University Archives dating between the 1970s and the 1990s, this exhibit invites you to consider the many ways that Maryland faculty, staff, and students of the past expressed weirdness in its various senses: as having to do with destiny but also in pursuit of the bizarre, the strange, the quirky, and non-conformity. Here, we see examples of Maryland’s weirdness in places like the student-initiated Maryland Food Co-op, student newspapers and publications, the folklore and superstitions students shared with each other, and a campaign designed to convince students they should be studying to counter UMD’s reputation as a party school.

Want to learn more about the mini-exhibit? Come to the opening reception with remarks from student curators tomorrow, September 30, in the Hornbake Lobby from 4-5! by @hornbakelibrary

Happy Henson Week, Terps! The muppet in this photo is indeed Kermit the Frog 🐸 but the man in this picture is NOT Jim Henson; it's former UMD president William "Brit" Kirwan. Kirwan honored Jane and Jim Henson at this 1990 homecoming football game, which occurred a few months after Henson's death at age 53.

To keep celebrating Henson Week, Hornbake Library has a bunch of programming today. Stop by Hornbake for Pop-up Button making from 12-1, then stick around for a lecture about the Henson Collection at the National Museum of American History from 1-2. From 2-3, get up close and personal with archival materials from the Children's Television Workshop. Finally the day concludes with a discussion by Dr. Borzekowski about Kami the Muppet and when Sesame Street took on HIV and AIDS.

Join the Hornbake Library Letter Press Studio Team!

We’re looking for a talented #Terp to support outreach and events in the letterpress studio. It’s a great opportunity for students to gain experience in public programming, book arts, and letterpress printing!

Funded through the Do Good Campus Fund grant, this position provides the opportunity for us to help maximize the impact of the letterpress studio as an experiential learning space at UMD.
