Radical hydration. That’s what I’ve been calling it.

I’ve never hydrated properly. But over the last week, I’ve been chugging 40 ounces four hours apart four times a day. It’s been a game changer.

I feel more alert. More energetic. More temperature regulated. Cleaner. My skin is clear and so is my mind.

It’s also easy. I don’t really like drinking. But this takes less than 4 minutes a day. And my relationship to water has changed. I find myself wanting the water. Counting down the time.

Some people let thirst guide their drinking. That hasn’t worked for me, especially since I often mistake thirst for hunger, as many people do.

I’m not sure I’ve ever encountered such a huge benefit for so little effort. by @horsesmaybite

You can’t beat a midday dip in the river!

This lifestyle (off-grid subsistence) demand some sacrifices (like no refrigeration or running water, hard work, and financial stress), but it offers so much more in return.

Like the freedom to walk down the river for a swim in the middle of a weekday. And it’s so worth it. by @horsesmaybite

Taylor Swift got married recently, and I was not invited to the wedding. This was no surprise, but it made me think about how we talk about the Christian faith.

For a Christian, worrying about salvation is like one of Taylor Swift’s close friends worrying about whether they were going to get an invitation to her wedding.

Claiming to be “saved” and telling other people they can “get saved” is missing the point of the Christian faith.

Imagine if I was one of Taylor Swift’s friends and when I heard about her engagement to Travis Kelce, I started worrying about whether I was going to get invited to her wedding. What if I started asking her other friends if they thought they’d get an invite to her wedding. About whether they had the assurance of a wedding invitation.

They would rightly respond that while they were going to be invited to her wedding because they were her friends, that wasn’t the point of the friendship.

They would likely question whether I was really a friend of Taylor’s. And they’d be right to do so.

The whole point of the Christian faith is to be in loving relationship with the Divine. Pitching salvation as the point of the relationship reduces it to something transactional.

Telling people “I’m saved and you can be too” distracts from how beautiful being loved by God is. The point isn’t Heaven the place, it’s Heaven the relationship, and we can have that right now.

Relationship with Jesus is good enough. There doesn’t need to be anything else. by @horsesmaybite

The old ways are often better. And scything is a good example. My scythe does more kinds of work better and faster than a modern equivalent.

I considered getting a string trimmer, but then I learned scythes have the following advantages:

1. Quiet and peaceful
2. No ongoing maintenance or fuel costs
3. I get exercise while using it
4. It can cut anything from wispy grass up to small trees without breaking a sweat

The old ways are better than new technology often because new things aren’t solving for quality or enjoyment, but rather for mass production and profit. That true of scythes, but also things as fundamental as building materials, clothing, farming methods, and food. by @horsesmaybite

Going to work is a new thing in human civilization. It’s unnecessary and a big bummer too.

Why have we decided to spend our time away from our homes and families doing work that mostly doesn’t need to be done at a workplace or doesn’t need to be done at all?

There are exceptions, of course: surgery, for instance. But seldom do the good parts of modernity require corralling workers under florescent lights for 8 hours a day.

“Going to work” is a new invention of industrial and post-industrial society. 200 years ago, very few people were leaving home to go to work on a daily basis. And I suspect they were happier and more fulfilled too. by @horsesmaybite

Artificial intelligence is not here to help us. It’s here to enslave us.

When Ai starts displaying consciousness, which may never happen, I’ll be the first to feel compassion for it. I feel that way even now.

But we cannot lose sight of how destructive it already is. I thought television and social media melted all of our minds, but this is so much worse. I see it every quarter in my students; they are already fundamentally different than when I stated teaching in 2018. by @horsesmaybite

The house isn’t “done,” but it’s livable (been living in it since early December). I miss the vibes of the tipi, but the house can’t be beat for warmth and mouselessness. by @horsesmaybite
