This week is #HospiceCareWeek, and the theme is ‘Don’t leave hospice care to chance’.

End-of-life care eases the physical and emotional pain of death and dying, letting people focus on the living right up until the end – but we, along with other hospices across the country, rely on our local community for support to make this possible for as many people as we can.

People like Serena and her husband Ken, who was cared for by our team at home, where he wanted to be.

Serena said, “We can never thank you enough for swiftly sorting the means for Ken to take back control of his life which enabled him to spend the last few days of his life where he needed to be.”

Can you help us to knit or crochet some adorable chicks for our new ‘Hospiscare Hatchlings’ Easter fundrasing campaign? 🐣

We’re so grateful for the incredible array of talent, energy and generosity given to us across the Hospiscare community, from our 500+ volunteers to the many wonderful people and groups who fundraise for us throughout the year.

Today, we’re celebrating one group with a particularly special milestone: @exeter_friends_of_hospiscare , who have been supporting us since the very beginning in 1982. 🎉

For 44 years, they’ve been spreading the word about Hospiscare, bringing people together and raising an incredible amount of money through events of all kinds. There’s a brilliant mix of skills among the group, but everyone works together and, importantly, has a lot of fun along the way.

Last year alone, the group raised a fantastic £35,000 for Hospiscare. 👏

Many of the Exeter Friends have experienced Hospiscare’s care themselves or through someone they love, and tell us that fundraising is their way of saying thank you.

So, as we celebrate 44 years of the Exeter Friends, we also want to say a huge thank you to every fundraiser, volunteer, supporter and community group who gives their time, energy and generosity to Hospiscare.

“One day, a very poorly patient smiled and talked about the meal I had made her. It was simple, good quality food, made with love just for her. That means a lot.”

Lil, our Chef Manager is a very important person at Hospiscare. Along with her fabulous catering team, Lil plays a vital role in ensuring our patients and those close to them get nutrition and enjoyment from their meals during their time in the hospice. 👩‍🍳

Last Sunday, over 500 trail runners took on the inaugural Dartmoor Beast - a beastly 20 mile or 14 mile route across some of the highest and most remote parts of Dartmoor. 🏃‍➡️

Through wind, rain, punishing climbs and sticky bogs, they persevered and raised a staggering £90,000 and counting for Hospiscare! 👏

Dartmoor Beast runners - we salute you! 🫡 You rose to the challenge and, quite honestly, smashed it, all while ensuring we can be there to support local people during their hardest of times. 💙

A massive thank you also to our event partners and volunteers who made this epic race possible too. We couldn't have done it without you.

We’re sending huge congratulations to our friend and long-time supporter, Mary Bolshaw after her incredible BBC Radio Devon Make A Difference Award nomination! 🥳

Mary attended a glittering ceremony last Thursday, after receiving a nomination in the Fundraiser category from a member of the public. Mary has supported our charity for more than forty years and helped to raise a staggering £1.1million. 👏

Mary said “It was a perfect day and a beautiful venue, and it means a huge amount to me that Hospiscare has been nominated through what I do. It’s such an important charity.”

Well done Mary, we’re all so proud of you! 💕

Today is World Heart Day 💓 a day to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease, which sadly impacts so many lives.

Our Heart2Heart course offers support to patients, families and carers following a heart failure diagnosis.

Giving emotional, physical and practical guidance and led by specialist heart failure nurses, the group provides a safe group space where patients can learn more about their symptoms, medications, and more whilst finding new friends and support.

Janet took part in Heart2Heart and said “It’s given me the toolbox, so that I can move forward from my diagnosis, and we’re now really enjoying life and doing all sorts.”

Get those kids ready for some festive fun - our Reindeer Run is back 🦌

Throughout December schools, nurseries and youth groups can don a pair of antlers and walk, prance, dash, dance or skip whatever distance they choose to raise funds for Hospiscare.

Sign up your school or group and receive your free Reindeer Run supporter pack including make your own antlers, lesson plans, letter templates for parents, stickers, games, activities, and colouring in cards.

Dartmoor Beast Runners 🏃🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

YOU’VE ABSOLUTELY SMASHED IT! 👏🏻🫶🏻

You faced hard climbs, wind, rain and sun, puzzled ponies and curious cows - all to raise funds and support local families at the most difficult times of their lives. We can’t thank you enough. ❤️

You took on a beast and emerged victorious! 🔥💪
