We’re revisiting the Signature Rooms at NestFest from this past weekend. Carson Terry’s room, Living Module, was inspired by principles of adaptable design, and how it can transform larger living spaces. The project asks how thoughtful use of space can create room rooms that serve many purposes where furniture becomes architecture objects serve multiple functions, and every element is intentionally considered.

Day 54 -  Carson Terry @hossly

Carson Terry is a blacksmith, metalworker, sculptor and artist whose work explores how we relate to the objects we use every day. Drawing on nearly two decades of experience, he forges functional pieces that challenge disposable consumer culture and celebrate durability, repair, and the lasting value of handmade work.

A. What/Who do you consider as your community?
My community includes artists, writers, educators, dancers, woodworkers, blacksmiths, textile artists, neighbors, gardeners, family and friends. I’m drawn to the conversations that emerge across disciplines and ways of living, and I enjoy finding the connections that link different practices, perspectives, and experiences.

B. What kind of world are you building?
I hope to contribute to a curious and mindful world where growth is grounded in integrity, reciprocity, and care. Through making durable objects from reclaimed materials, I encourage greater awareness of our relationships to the things we make, use, repair, and share.

C. What does "prosperity" and "growth" mean to you?
Prosperity and growth mean cultivating meaningful relationships, resilient communities, and opportunities for mutual support. Rather than measuring success through accumulation or competition, I value shared knowledge, strong connections, and the ability to care for one another while doing work that feels meaningful and worthwhile.

Since April 26th the "Portland 250 Artist Project" has been highlighting artists from our Portland region, with a goal of reaching 250 profiles. This project makes visible the artists, creatives, and culture bearers who are the lifeblood of community joy, vibrance, safety and resilience!

Artists are critical stakeholders in our region's civic health. Join this journey with me and 250 community artists who create thought provoking work that fuel our culture and enliven our collective well-being.

Forged dog gate made to sit somewhere between sculpture and function.

When it’s open, it keeps the dogs from heading down a steep staircase. When it’s closed, it reads as a wall piece. Part of my practice is taking ordinary hardware and making it something you actually want to look at, like a hook on a wall or a curtain rod bracket. So when @pataustindesign came to me with the idea of a gate that could also be a sculpture, I was excited to take it on with them.

This piece is going into a house that was designed to include the work of many artists. I have a few other pieces in the home already, and I’m really happy to add this one to the mix.
In this design, I wanted it to feel unmistakably handmade. A lot of traditional forged forms have been standardized through machine replication, and the shapes start to lose their character. I kept the scrolls and curls slightly mismatched so each element feels hand forged over the anvil horn. I’m hoping it brings a fresh way of seeing these older forms.

Thank you @pataustindesign for including me. by @hossly
