On October 2, Hostos welcomed New York City leaders, educators, workforce development advocates, and apprentices to our Children’s Center to celebrate the NYC Mayor’s Office’s $1.2 million investment in early childhood education apprenticeships.

The event, hosted at the Hostos Children’s Center, brought together Julie Su, Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice; Doug Lipari, NYC Talent Executive Director; Emmy Liss, NYC Childcare Czar; Dr. Althea Sterling, Hostos Student Development and Enrollment Management Vice President; Catherine García-Bou, Hostos Children’s Center Director; representatives from the CUNY Professional Development Institute (PDI); and Kennedy Children’s Center (KCC) to celebrate the expansion of early childhood apprenticeship programs at CUNY and the KCC to prepare the next generation of educators.

The event highlighted how apprenticeship programs combine paid classroom experience, professional training, mentorship, and credential attainment to create pathways into the childcare workforce while helping meet the growing demand for qualified early childhood educators.

Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su emphasized the value of earn-and-learn opportunities, noting: “When people earn while they learn, it shows how much we value the work and the workers. Apprenticeships raise wages, empower educators, and capture the skills it takes to do this work in a systematic way that helps elevate caregiving and give it the professional recognition it deserves.”

Guests toured classrooms, met educators, and saw firsthand how the Hostos Children’s Center serves as both a nurturing learning environment for children and a training ground for the next generation of early childhood professionals.

Hostos is proud to support educational excellence, workforce development, and opportunity for the educators who help shape New York City’s future.

The Hostos Research Center (HRC) welcomed faculty, staff, and students to its Fall 2026 Open House on September 30. To kick off the afternoon, Dr. Sofía Oviedo, Research Programs Director and HRC Co-Director; Dr. Yoel Rodríguez, HRC Co-Director and Natural Sciences Chair; and Dr. Antonios Varelas, Behavioral and Social Sciences Professor and HRC Steering Committee Member, introduced attendees to the many research, funding, and professional development opportunities available through the Center. Highlights included the ADELANTE and IDEAS grant programs, the HRC Scholars student research initiative, grant-writing workshops, and other resources that foster a vibrant culture of research and innovation at Hostos.

The event also marked the launch of the Fall 2026 Colloquium Series with a presentation by Rocío Rayo, Director of Transfer Services, ADELANTE grantee, and Ph.D. Candidate in Anthropology at the CUNY Graduate Center.

Drawing on oral histories, fieldwork, and interviews with women in Nicaragua, Rayo’s presentation challenged conventional ideas about where history lives and who preserves it. “History does not live only in archives and institutions,” Rayo said. “It also lives in objects, kitchens, songs, prayers, stories, and everyday acts of care.”

Rayo’s project stems from a year of fieldwork in Nicaragua that concluded in 2025, where she conducted interviews with cooperative founders, community leaders, and multiple generations of women. The research will inform her doctoral dissertation and several scholarly publications examining how the memories of the Nicaraguan Revolution are sustained, adapted, and passed on over time.

The Colloquium Series continues on October 14 with “From Community Voices to Media Design: Lessons from ‘Alma in the Bronx’”, presented by Dr. Mariana Diaz-Wionczek, Assistant Professor in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Department. The series will then feature Dr. Allison Franzese, Associate Professor in the Natural Sciences Department, on October 21, presenting “Southern Hemisphere Winds during the Middle Miocene.”

Exciting news: Hostos has been awarded a highly competitive federal Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) grant to boost student success and career readiness! Administered by the U.S. Department of Education, this grant will help Hostos enhance its student support and institutional effectiveness, starting with $573,000 in first-year funding and potentially totaling $2.87 million over five years, pending annual progress and ongoing federal support.

“We are so grateful for this award, as it helps us deliver on our mission to drive socioeconomic growth through education right here in the South Bronx, while also strengthening our commitment to the career-focused vision of CUNY Beyond,” said Hostos President Daisy Cocco De Filippis. “The bottom line is we are here to help people in the community reach for their dreams and improve the lives of their families for generations to come.”

With this grant, Hostos will expand its proven Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, placing trained tutors directly in the classroom to boost student learning. SI support in English and math will continue, while tutoring expands to more high-need first-year courses. The grant also enables the integration of career readiness and work-based learning into students’ journeys. Plus, the grant will also create opportunities for students to serve as tutors, helping them gain professional experience while helping their peers thrive academically.

“This award is an investment in our students and in the future of the South Bronx,” said Andrea Fabrizio, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at Hostos Community College. “By strengthening the academic supports students need when they first arrive at Hostos and expanding opportunities for career-connected learning as they progress through their studies, we are creating a more seamless pathway to graduation, transfer, and employment.”

For more than two decades, Hostos English Professor Linda Hirsch, Ph.D., has championed the power of reading and writing across the curriculum. A born-and-bred New Yorker and product of the public school system through college, Hirsch has dedicated her career to English education, teaching, scholarship, curriculum innovation, and making conversations about education accessible beyond the classroom.

Her distinguished career has earned recognition in both education and media. In 2025, Hirsch became the first CUNY Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) coordinator and the only CUNY recipient ever named a Distinguished Fellow by the Association for Writing Across the Curriculum (AWAC). She was also recently recognized with a Silver Telly Award for “EdCast,” the award-winning education program she produces and hosts on CUNY TV.

“Hostos is fortunate and proud to count Professor Linda Hirsch as a member of our faculty,” said Hostos President Dr. Daisy Cocco De Filippis. “With her deep pedagogical experience, the breadth of her achievements, and her enduring commitment to the power of words, she is an inspiring asset to our community! Brava, Dr. Hirsch!”

Hirsch has been central to Hostos’ WAC initiative since its creation in 1999, helping build a campus culture that understands writing as fundamental to learning across disciplines. Her work has included mentoring nearly 100 CUNY graduate students, developing a First Year Seminar, contributing to the First Year Experience, researching English language learners, and redesigning the A.A. degree to include disciplinary Liberal Arts Options.

Her commitment to education also extends beyond Hostos. Through “EdCast” and previous work as a content consultant for PBS’s “Ghostwriter” and education consultant and producer for BronxNet’s “Open,” Hirsch has connected educators and the broader public with conversations about literacy, bilingualism, education policy, and learning.

Her philosophy is perhaps best captured in her advice: “Undertake what seems impossible, seek like-minded colleagues, stick to the task, but make sure to have fun along the way.”

History was made at Hostos as ABC7’s award-winning “Tiempo” brought its production on the road for the first time in 43 years, choosing the College as the inaugural stop for a special taping celebrating Latino “Trailblazers and Unsung Heroes.”

Hosted by Joe Torres, the special was taped in front of a live audience at Hostos’ Main Theater. The program brought together scholars, elected officials, community leaders, entrepreneurs, artists and advocates whose work reflects the diversity and contributions of Latino communities across the New York metropolitan area.

Before the taping, multi-Grammy Award-winning musician Arturo O’Farrill and his band wowed attendees with a live performance as guests arrived and took their seats.

The program opened with a pre-recorded interview with Hostos President Dr. Daisy Cocco De Filippis, followed by a conversation featuring Dr. Julie Gafney, Vice President for Institutional Advancement; Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation; and Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson.

The special also featured Sunny Hostin, multi-Emmy Award-winning co-host of ABC’s “The View”; Dr. Melanie Plasencia, Professor of Sociology at Rutgers University–Newark; Victor Pérez, producer of “These Days”; and Irv Ibarguen, Assistant Professor of History at New York University.

Community activism in the Bronx was highlighted through the work of David Caba, founder of Bronx Rising Against Gun Violence, and Kunta Lugo, also known as Nelly.

Hostos alumna Ianna Andrade, founder and CEO of Hire Up Services, shared her journey from the College’s Dental Hygiene program to entrepreneurship. She appeared alongside sportswear designer Kevin Leonel and café owner Héctor Carvajal.

The program concluded with a celebration of Latino contributions to the performing arts, featuring Broadway’s Rick Negrón, who plays Compay in “Buena Vista Social Club,” and multi-Grammy Award-winning jazz musician Arturo O’Farrill.

The “Trailblazers and Unsung Heroes” special airs Sunday, October 18, at 11:30 a.m. on ABC7.

Hostos Community College’s Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month Awards Ceremony was a moving celebration of Latino leaders, educators, and scholars making a difference in their communities.

There was no shortage of inspiration during Wednesday’s ceremony, which featured a message from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis on the importance of appreciating one’s roots, reflections on the significance of Hispanic Heritage Month from Fidel Malena, Bronx Regional Rep. for the Office of Governor Kathy Hochul, and powerful stories from honorees Natalie Espino, Wanda Matos, Jesús Pérez, and Yecenia Cardoza-Delarosa.

Ana Garcia Reyes, Dean of Community Relations and the program's coordinator, presented them with certificates of completion. The event also included a scholarship presentation for three exemplary Hostos students, Guillersy Rosario Pichardo, Janice Nelson, and Jorge Sanz.

We are honored to become the home of the Bill Aguado Papers, a remarkable archival collection documenting more than five decades of community organizing, cultural advocacy, educational innovation, and arts leadership.

Donated by legendary cultural activist and arts administrator Bill Aguado and Kathi Pavlick, the collection preserves the stories, relationships, movements, and institutions that helped transform the Bronx into a center of artistic and cultural production.

From Aguado’s early work in education and youth development to his leadership at the Bronx Council on the Arts, En Foco, BRIO, the South Bronx Cultural Corridor, and countless other initiatives, the archive offers an extraordinary record of how communities built lasting cultural infrastructure through collaboration, creativity, and perseverance.

“Bill’s support for Hostos has been constant and generous,” said Hostos President Dr. Daisy Cocco De Filippis. “There is a genuine affection for Bill and Kathy by the Hostos family.”

For Aguado, the donation reflects a commitment to preserving community stories where they belong. “It was about making sure our communities had the resources, space, and recognition to tell their own stories,” he said. “A lot of what is now celebrated began with people working together and insisting their communities had something important to contribute.”

Hostos Archivist Professor William Casari emphasized that the collection “documents not only Bill Aguado’s extraordinary career, but also the ecosystem of artists, educators, organizers, and cultural leaders who transformed the South Bronx.”

Cataloged by Associate Archivist Kevin O’Leary, the papers reveal a history that developed alongside grassroots cultural movements. “The collection shows what it took to gain recognition for the borough’s artistic vitality,” O’Leary noted.

By preserving the Bill Aguado Papers at Hostos, the College strengthens its role as a steward of Bronx history while ensuring future generations of students, scholars, artists, and community members can access and learn from this extraordinary legacy.

Twenty years of golf, giving, and opening doors for Hostos students.

On September 17, the Hostos Community College Foundation celebrated its 20th Annual Scholarship Fund Golf Outing Classic, bringing together 131 golfers, sponsors, alumni, and community partners at Pelham Bay & Split Rock Golf Courses.

The milestone event raised over $179,000 to support scholarships and student success.

“Philanthropy has the power to transform a student’s experience of college and, ultimately, the trajectory of their life,” said Dr. Julie Gafney, Vice President of Institutional Advancement.

Congratulations to our contest winners, Antillana Supermarket (first place) and BronxCare (second place), and thank you to everyone who continues to invest in the future of Hostos students and the Bronx.

Hostos’ 2026 Constitution Day on September 17 invited all to reflect on democracy, civic participation, and the ongoing work of building a “more perfect union.”

Convened by the Office of the President, the event was moderated by History Professor Kristopher Burrell of the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences. The program brought together faculty, students, public officials, and college leaders to consider the Constitution’s enduring relevance.

In an opening lecture, Professor Burrell placed the document in historical context, reminding us that its promises have been continually contested, expanded, and reinterpreted, and that building a more perfect union “is work we must continue every day.”

President Daisy Cocco De Filippis underscored the importance of knowing our rights and understanding the power of education and civic participation. “The Constitution is not simply a document of the past, and it is our responsibility to ensure that its ideals continue to reach every member of our community.”

Councilmember Justin Sánchez reminded students to understand the Constitution as a document that shapes their rights, opportunities, and responsibilities within their own communities.

Honoring the document itself, Philip Oliveri, Director of the Office of Compliance and Diversity, read the iconic Preamble to the U.S. Constitution, followed by Carlos Rivera, Associate Dean of Student Development and Enrollment Management, who read the Preamble in Spanish, giving “We the People” a powerful resonance across languages.

To finalize, SGA student leader Heather Steward read Emma Lazarus’ “The New Colossus,” after which Diana Kreymer, Executive Chief of Staff and Deputy to the President, offered closing remarks.

Representatives from the League of Women Voters of New York attended the program, distributing pocket-sized copies of the U.S. Constitution and registering eligible community members to vote.

May we continue to honor the Constitution not only by remembering its words, but by working every day to ensure that its promise of justice, equality, and opportunity represents and includes all of us.
