While the cyclone tore through in March myself and my family watched my grandma, Noanie, leave us forever. It was unexpected, or at least as unexpected as it can be at 88.
In Bundaberg it wasn’t even raining, but the far away storm seemed strangely symbolic for everything that was happening to us over that week. Bracing for impact and the uncertainty of the destruction that would be left behind.

Witnessing her move on and everything that came after has changed me so profoundly that there aren’t words for it. I feel naive and selfish for not helping my friends enough or facing my own mortality more.

Noanie was truly the sweetest and kindest woman on the planet. A true Libran, with so much elegance and poise, but always a country girl at heart. She showed me the meaning of unconditional love and demonstrated it time and time again, even in the darkest of circumstances. I’ll forever miss getting yelled at for turning up unexpectedly because her hair wasn’t brushed and she had no lippy on. All of the best parts of me are thanks to her and if I’m even half the woman she was I’ll be doing pretty good.

Something felt like fate having the lab, being able to restore old prints and rescan large format and 35mm negatives. Noanie was always the one with the camera (despite being a literal model) so I’m grateful to have been able to find a few hidden gems amongst her things.

We’ve also just lost our uncle Joey, her youngest son and my mums youngest brother. I have absolutely no words for that at the moment but I’m taking solace in the fact they are together again.

All of this is to say that the last 6 months have been the hardest I’ve had for a while. My heart goes out to anyone dealing with grief and the mess that it leaves in its path.

I didn’t really intend to share these but I wanted to post here so I can look at them whenever I want. I also didn’t mean for this to be such a long overshare, but I couldn’t post the photos without saying something so here we are. Be kind to one another and call those family members you haven’t spoken to in a while, you truly never know when your time is up. by @hotbokchoy

I have so many photos stuck in my camera roll from last year that I’ve never posted. In so many ways 2024 was amazing. I went to the US, two of my best friends got married, I turned 30, my business is rolling along and I met so many beautiful people both here and overseas that have expanded my heart in ways I could never have imagined. I’m happy and in love and life is somewhat stable and good (comparatively).

All of this exists simultaneously with immense suffering, both locally and abroad, witnessing a genocide on my phone every day, family turmoil, the constant tightness in my chest and swirling thoughts about how to make it in a world divided. How to make it in a world with systems that seem so stacked against us and even more against those less fortunate. New York City highlighted this for me more than anywhere I’ve ever seen. It’s an unhoused person injecting into their neck while a cyber truck drives past, a couple of doors down from the Chanel store. I feel we all know this disparity exists, but somehow we forget and post a fit check.

I still know beauty is everywhere and I love to find it, appreciate it and cling to it. But posting on this app or posting/broadcasting at all has felt so wrong. It feels so incongruous with these feelings and like I’m lying to anyone watching. All of this is to say I’m posting some photos from the year that was, and maybe I’ll post some more. But I don’t know what to feel about it and maybe other people feel this too. Regardless, sending love to anyone and everyone for 2025. May it be better than your last and all of your dreams come true. taken in New York City, USA by @hotbokchoy

More film shots for @serentonin & @josephcbotica ‘s new collaborative work - Lure.

These were taken around an annual family fishing competition put on by the local chapter of VMR. We lived on our dad’s boat on the marina a few hundred meters away. This is such a formative place for Seren and I, and it was very special to help out with this work.

Lure is showing at @outerspace.brisbane until December 7th, go check it out. 🎣
