@hotelsaltus has been on my hotel bucket list for a long time. I first spoke to @claudiamumelter, Head of Magic, over a year ago about how much I loved what they had created here, so when planning a two-month Italian road trip, Saltus was the first stop.

Set at 1,100 metres above Bolzano in South Tyrol, on the edge of the Dolomites and Salten plateau, Saltus is one of those hotels where the architecture makes complete sense once you’re actually inside it.

Designed by Tara Architekten, the building is embedded into the steep hillside in three volumes, with huge panes of glass framing the forest and mountains rather than competing with them. Local larch, walnut, porphyry, clay and lime keep the interiors incredibly quiet. There is very little here that doesn’t need to be here, and that’s probably what I loved most about it.

The relationship with nature carries through everything. The Forest Spa and saunas look directly into the trees, the Sky Pool opens out towards the Dolomites, and trails lead you straight from the hotel onto the plateau. We did Pilates twice, a sound bath, sauna sessions and a lot of staring out of windows. We were also ridiculously lucky to watch the harvest moon rise over the mountains from the hotel.

Art is part of the experience too. During our stay, works by artist-in-residence @lenahenke__ appeared throughout the spaces, making the hotel feel a little like a constantly evolving exhibition as you moved through it.

What I kept coming back to was how little separation there is between the design and the landscape. The architecture doesn’t try to recreate some idea of an Alpine hotel inside. It gives the forest, the changing light and the Dolomites room to do most of the work.

A very good beginning to two months on the road in Italy.
