House9’s position on current events in Palestine and Israel

We at House9 stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and everyone who is suffering at the hands of imperialism and capitalism everywhere. We stand with everyone, including the global Jewish community, who condemns the Israeli government’s ongoing and violent occupation.

We do not condone or support anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, transphobia, racism, or any other exclusionary tactic that is used to oppress. We recognize that the majority of us at House9 are currently occupying Indigenous land on Turtle Island, and we do so with great humility, gratitude and respect for Indigenous people here and abroad.

If you find yourself confused by what's happening, both this month and historically, please don't hesitate to reach out to us and we will refer you to vetted sources.

Last year, alongside our friends at Criterium, we were invited to work with the Laboratoire en arts contemporain at Université Laval on a retrospective of Irene F. Whittome’s work at Ogden. Criterium and House9 co-created the central art direction, after which we worked on the website and they took on the book. This project is the first online archive of Whittome’s work, bringing together selected art and documentation spanning 20 years. Maxime Coulombe and Julien Lebargy were truly fantastic collaborators and the relationship remains a true career highlight!

Winner: Bronze, Idéa 2026
Category: Communication / Site Web ou application

🌀

Publication & Launch Announcement!

The Employee is a publication of critical texts and first-person testimonials by artists and cultural workers reflecting on the links between public funding, artistic commitment, and self-exploitation in their practices and labour contexts.

The book is edited by Joshua Schwebel and Lauren Wetmore and includes contributions by Mariane Bourcheix-Laporte, Teresa Carlesimo, Bopha Chhay, Dana Kopel, Michelle Lacombe, Denise Ryner, Camille-Zoé Valcourt-Synnott, and Marina Vishmidt, with graphic design by House9. It is co-published by Art Metropole and Forest City Gallery.

“The Employee is proof that institutional critique still has bite.” – Nizan Shaked, PhD

The Employee emerges from its namesake artwork, a conceptual project of institutional critique by Joshua Schwebel that took place at Forest City Gallery in London, ON (2020- 2021). As a subsequent artistic gesture, a comprehensive archive of the thousands of emails connected to The Employee can be seen at www.the-employee.com. This archive constitutes a trace of the artwork and documents the continuous administrative labour of communication involved in cultural work.

House9’s creative director Farah, joined industry professionals Kevin Lo, Joman Baku and Maira Gonzalez in Design Montreal’s Changing Mindsets video series. This series was developed as part of Never Was Average and Six Cinquième’s larger initiative, In Perspective: A Practical Approach Using Intentional Conversation to Enhance Underrecognized Perspectives in Design. This project aims to “address a significant gap in the Montréal design community, i.e. a cultural lag and lack of representation, and to find ways to be more accessible, inclusive, present and inviting for Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC). In turn, this will help create truly inclusive living and working environments, encouraging the industry to better reflect the people and culture of the city.”

We were thrilled when @darkopacitieslab at Concordia University approached us to design their visual identity and website. The Lab, led by director Balbir Singh, describes itself as “a hub for BIPOC political and aesthetic study and strategy.” Our primary inspiration emerged from the idea of opacity as a means of selective disclosure and power, and we were moved by the poetic and aesthetic nature of revelatory practices that BIPOC and non-Occidental cultures have long enacted, be it for self-preservation, a need to edit and/or obscure, as a mechanism for welcoming and sharing, and the positives and negatives therein.

This website is mono-lingual at its root, but seamlessly allows the inclusion of French, Arabic, Punjabi, and Indigenous languages within what is known as Canada.

Big thank you to the entire DOL team for their trust in the process and for allowing us to realize this idea.

“My work is not a plea for inclusion. I’ve grown beyond the need to be included in a problematic system. It is an honest attempt to get to know, and accept myself.” - Buseje Bailey

Earlier this year, we completed our work on “Buseje Bailey. reasons why we have to disappear every once in while. A Black art history project” by Yaniya Lee. This collection of essays and interviews reflect on Bailey’s career during the 80s and 90s, and continues to be a powerful lens through which we may examine our own relationships with mainstream acceptance; our personal, public and private identities; and our struggles for survival.

Massive thank you as always to Artexte and Yaniya for inviting us to help to bring such important work to life. Our ongoing collaboration with both had always been so delightful and generative, and we’re so lucky to have these opportunities to work together.

This crucial and critical work is available at artexte.ca.

@artexte @yaniyalee

Plus tôt cette année, nous avons terminé notre travail sur « Buseje Bailey. reasons why we have to disappear every once in while.

We recently had the pleasure of working with writer and historian Yaniya Lee on not one, but two books. This book, Selected Writing on Black Canadian Art, is published by Madelene Veber's imprint figure ground, and is already in its second edition in collaboration with Art Metropole.

This collection of essays and interviews looks at the Black experience in relation to art, art-making, surveillance, access, judgement, "neutrality," diaspora, home, and so much more, all within (and outside of) the content of Black Canadian art history. We invite you to pick up a copy and read this truly significant collection of experiences and teachings by some of Canada's leading artists, curators and thinkers.

@yaniyalee @elikerrhq @figuregroundbooks @artmetropole
