Aaliyah Stewart (she/they) takes us through the lx start-up process for a show at St.Ann’s Warehouse! This show uses fog, haze and battery-operated, wirelessly-controlled practicals which are shown in the video.

Aaliyah Stewart is a New York native theater worker. She participated in the performing arts all throughout her public schooling but with her interest in playwriting and directing led to an alternative career path. Aaliyah was apart of the first cohort of fellows for Roundabout Theater Company’s ‘Theatrical Workforce Development Program’ where she chose to focus on lighting and carpentry work. Through their support she became the inaugural Derek Lloyd Fellow at Performance Space New York and connected with many more theater spaces in the city. She most notably works at St Ann’s Warehouse as an overhire electrician and seasonal light board operator. She’s a fan of stand up comedy and lying down when her body needs it.

Part two, the final part, of the full transcript from the interview Amara did with Lighting Designer Miriam Crowe, who is currently working on a new musical called “Freak the Mighty”.

Miriam speaks on the challenges of working on large-scale shows, insight into touring with rock bands and the importance of seeing yourself in media.

In Part One Miriam talked process, co-productions and equipment! Many thanks to Miriam for this open and honest glimpse into her process.

Based on the beloved novel by Rodman Philbrick, this new musical follows the adventures of two unlikely friends, Maxwell Kane and Kevin “Freak” Avery. Though Maxwell and Kevin feel like outsiders, together they transform into “Freak The Mighty”, a heroic duo empowered to take on the world. Shepherded by the Tony® Award winning producers of Come From Away, Freak The Mighty celebrates friendship, resilience and community in the face of adversity: a soaring new musical with the spirit to connect to the dreamer in all of us.

Liv Grasso (she/her) is a freelance electrician who takes us on a day in her life prepping the new ‘Black Swan’ musical.

For those who aren’t familiar with this part of the electrics process, shop prep is when members of the electrics team goes to the shop before load-in to prep the units. This can mean labeling, setting modes, or even pre-building and cabling truss that will go into the venue.

Natalie Shipley (she/her) shares her process of creating a followspot tracks as an Assistant Lighting Designer. She is currently the ALD on CATS: The Jellicle Ball at the Broadhurst!

Part 2/2 of this series is about the tech and preview process - editing spot tracks in the room, using the PRG Ground Control system with multi-toggle control so that each followspot controls a front light as well and two backlights (all movers).

Lighting Designer: Adam Honoré
Associate LD: Katy Atwell
ML Programmer: Bridget Chervenka

Natalie Shipley is a programmer and ALD based in New York City. She loves working in immersive spaces, on new works, and with her friends. Recently she’s worked as Devin Cameron’s associate on Le Petit Rouge at Company XIV and was the programmer for Initiative at The Public designed by Chris Ackerlind and Saturday Church at NYTW designed by Adam Honoré. When she’s not hiding in a dark theater you can find her painting a new wall in her apartment or killing it at a pickup volleyball game.
