ORDER NOW: The ChristCo Cross Home Crucifixion Kit (2025) “The urge to crucify can strike at any time. Yet research shows most Americans are woefully unprepared.”
🔨
So begins this ancient TV spot for ChristCo Cross, the largest and most well-known crucifixion kit manufacturer back during the home crucifixion boom of the late 90s and 2000s. Don’t go looking for any remnant of the company online. All record of its existence has been scrubbed. This is their only surviving infomercial. Folks of a certain age will probably remember seeing it on cable.
🔨
Okay, fine. I’m playing.
🔨
I directed this short in 2008 from a script I’d written at age 11 or 12.
🔨
My good friend @mrlemmycaution (aka @houseofcaution) produced it.
🔨
Getting it made was tricky because no one would let us film it in their yard. I can’t remember why. We also had a hard time finding a kid. I can’t remember why.
+
A ton of brave friends, crew members and professional actors ultimately made it happen.
🔨
I found the file a couple days ago and thought you might be interested.

Hellbender (2021)
A mother and her daughter live a life of strongly enforced isolation in the mountains. They have a seemingly great relationship save for the whole not letting the kid see other people thing. The real world creeps in, as it tends to do and things get complicated. And not just cuz of they’re witches.
Made by an auteur filmmaking family (this is apparently The Adams’ sixth film as a team), Hellbender is that rare beast of a film that feels immediately connective and untampered with. The Adams have a strong vision and the filmmaking chops to back it up. It’s also clear that the parents are also of that rare breed that listen to their children and take them seriously. Which is why Hellbender starts as one very familiar thing and then turns that well-trod narrative into something else. Something insightful, moving and occasionally shocking. I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen a movie that deals with a parent-child relationship quite like this. And it does it while fully subverting the whole witch subgenre while it’s at it.
If we lived in a smarter or more just world, Hellbender would get several Academy Awards. Instead we live in a world where the corporate lackeys that make up the Academy do all they can to squash out filmmaking this fierce and unique. Kudos to the new Adams Family. Keep ‘em coming. Oh, their band kinda rips too. On @shudder Highest recommendations.

Penda’s Fen (1974)
A young boy reckons with his school life, his home life as a pastor’s son and his life life, particularly his repressed homosexuality, in rural England.
It took me a few minutes to vibe with Penda’s Fen, mostly because the lead sounds nearly exactly like Richard Ayoade, one of the UK’s funniest comedians, but once I got past that, around the seven minute mark, I was fully locked in.
Penda’s Fen is sort of a Folk Horror Waking Life, the movie follows its lead from philosophical conversation to philosophical conversation punctuating these with feverish dreams and ecstatic visions. Devils, Angels and the last Pagan King of England are among those that show up as he reckons with his identity and the identity of England itself… mirroring his repressed sexuality with the layers of repressed history of Britain’s pagan past.
Challenging, beautiful and clearly massively influential to a generation of British artists and writers, the most vocal of them being Grant Morrison though I’m sure there’s quite a few more. I’m looking at you Moore and Gaiman.
What is the modern version of this? What mainstream entertainment asks questions this deep and presents them without judgement? I almost quoted dialog from the end of the movie because of how moving I found it but decided instead to suggest that this one, while not horror, is a stone cold masterpiece. Yup, another masterpiece on the @severeinfilms All The Haunts Be Our Box. Also on @shudder.

A Field In England (2013)
I’ve never done hallucinogens. I read an article as a teenager that they’re best not tampered with if you have mental illness in your family. But that’s another story. Actually I did Salvia once but because I ingested it instead of smoking it I didn’t hallucinate, instead I just got a nice body buzz. That’s also another story.
What I did do is watch A Field In England twice. Once under that influence of a large quantity of edible medical marijuana and once sober with the commentary track on.
I’m still not exactly sure what’s going on but I think at this point I’m confident in saying it has something to do with an alchemist, war, a phantom ale house, a buried treasure and lots and lots of psilocybin. Oh, there’s also a field.
I’ll save the word ‘visionary’ for David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick and maybe Gasper Noe. Wheatley’s film here is experimental, hallucinatory and inscrutable though. I’m not even kind of sure what he’s up to other than playing in the garden of magic mushrooms that is the British folk horror tradition and making the very most of a low budget, quick shooting schedule and excellent, excellent actors. It is gorgeous and funnier than I remember and I’m pretty sure future viewings will be even more rewarding. You know where to go… @severinfilms and @shudder

Viy (1967)
Completist archival review:
One would think, even with government sensors, there would have been a horror movie made in Russia before 1967. Apparently not. But, when they got down to business, they hit the ground running.
Concerning itself with a seminary student running afoul of a witch and administering last rites to a young girl, Viy comes on like Ingmar Bergman directing Haxan. And while it’s not as good as that would be, Viy is surely a one of a kind gem.
I found the movie neither spooky nor frightening in any way but it is otherworldly. It feels truly alien and that’s a gift. It’s strange that it feels this way given it’s a Christian-based folktale. Maybe it's that the Russian approach to faith, vodka, bravery and superstition is very, very different. I don’t know but I liked that it seems to hinge on the notion that faith is easy to have when it isn’t tested. And while the acting is a little broad for my taste (which may have to do with the dubbing... time for a rewatch with the proper audio) the set design, costumes, lighting are all spectacular. Plus the insane camera work seems straight out of Evil Dead, long before that was a glimmer in Mr. Rami’s eye. Looks like Peter Jackson may have cribbed a thing or two from this lost Russian gem as well. Recommended for the adventurous film scholars. On @shudder and @severinfilms

Robin Redbreast (1970)
After a rough break up, a middle aged woman retreats to a cottage in the country to, you know, get over things. I know what your’e thinking… nothing strange, weird or unsettling happens to her in her prosaic cottage. Wrong. Increasingly pushy neighbors, vermin infestations, kung fu exterminators, bird attacks and a missing diaphragm all come to visit our heroine. This being a British teleplay though, it’s all very, very polite.
Robin Redbreast is most notable for being the Robert Johnson to The Wickerman’s Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin. I have bad news, Robin Redbreast is no Robert Johnson. It is however a fascinating curio of a time when something in the water, or more likely in the soil, made folks in England very aware of their ancient past and their collective unconscious worked to grapple with it. It also seems like it might have been a bit shocking for the time, considering the subject matter includes pagan sacrifice and remarkably nuanced views on reproductive rights. Slow but a very specific kind of vibes galore.
Definitely not the best of this big ol’ horror box but invaluable none the less. On @severinfilms blu ray and @shudder.

Dark Waters (1993)
After the death of her father, a young woman travels to a remote convent on an island to see if she should continue the charitable donations her father was sending. Spoiler alert: They ain’t worshiping Jesus.
Beginning, as it does, with the drowning of an entire church, Dark Waters posits that the horror modernity fears predates previous cultures, and even the land, and comes from the primordial sea itself. A fact Lovecraft was finely attuned to.
Speaking of Howie, like all great Lovecraft adaptations (The Thing, Quatermass and The Pit, Prince Of Darkness) Dark Waters isn’t based specifically on one of his works. It does however have a deep understanding of them. It cannily synthesizes his stories, particularly Shadow Over Innsmouth, and melds them with other influences, especially Argento, to create a profoundly strange and upsetting experience. It’s pacing is a little measured but Like Eyes Of Fire this is another movie that I’m shocked doesn’t get talked about more.
Previously released on @severinfilms blu ray and now included in the All The Haunts Be Ours set. And on @shudder. Another strong recommend.

Il Demonio (1963)
Fitting movie for a Sunday.
In a small village in southern Italy a woman named Puri (that’s ‘pure’ in English for those keeping score at home) is obsessed with a man betrothed to another. After he rejects her she casts a hex on him, stalks him, tries another hex, sees a ghost and the town becomes convinced she is possessed by a demon.
What follows is a mix of Magical Realism, early Fellini and Catholicism clashing with Folk Magic. As Puri becomes a Pariah, the movie is careful to show the hypocrisy of the village adhering to just as many rituals and superstitions as the woman they fear is possessed by a demon. More, in fact.
It can’t be overstated how gorgeous the stark black and white cinematography is and how affecting Il Demonio is over all. The film is anchored by the overheated performance of Daliah Lavi who is one of the few that deserve the Isabelle Adjani award for Psychotic Women. Her tragic mania is incredibly moving and when you’re done watching it you can tell me whether or not you think she was actually possessed.
Il Demonio should be considered a foundational folk horror classic and it’s influence on The Exorcist (among other things) is clear but what I couldn’t shake was how much it felt like a Gilbert Hernandez Palomar story moved from Mexico to Italy. Someone’s got to get to work on a Love and Rockets adaptation.
I can’t stop thinking about this one. One of the best in @severinfilms folk horror box set. All these movies are now on @shudder too.

Alison’s Birthday (1981)
After being warned by her father’s ghost during a ouija sesh that something bad is going to happen on her 19th birthday if she goes home to her Aunt and Uncle’s house where she grew up, Alison makes plans to go to her Aunt and Uncle’s house where she grew up for a party to celebrate her 19th birthday. Wait… what?
An Australian mash up of The Wickerman and Rosemary’s Baby, Alison’s Birthday won’t change lives but it’s definitely a fun entry into its specific niche of horror.
Once she arrives at her childhood home the creepiness and odd behavior ratchets up to the point that no sane human being, particularly one who has seen their pal crushed to death by a bookcase while possessed by their dead father’s ghost while fucking with a ouija board would hang around… but around she does hang. Of course.
If I have any issue with Alison’s Birthday it’s that if you’ve seen movies (and you all have)
that follow this storyline it’s pretty paint by numbers. However, the third act is remarkable for its goofy action and sheer bleakness and its way better than Midsommar. I’m still thinking about the final shots and what it has to say about the vampiric nature of Power over young people and hoping that it’s not as inevitable at the movie thinks it is. Part of @severinfilms Folk Horror box as if you didn’t already know that.

Eyes Of Fire (1983)
Ummmm. Fuck. My head has been exploded.
I’m not sure the specifics of the plot matter but the family of a trapper, a delusional preacher, some red shirts and a woman who may or may not be a literal fairy, venture forth into the pre-colonized American wilderness and shit goes sideways. Like immediately. From there on out Fire delivers an unforgettable and unforgiving hallucinatory stew of the best kind folk or any other style of horror.
First and foremost, Eyes Of Fire is fucking bonkers. Disjointed and truly horrifying imagery mixes with lots of Tales From The Darkside effects to truly unsettling results. Further, in this movie’s world the sounds of American Colonialism are primitive synthesizers and things are all the more fucked up for it.
I don’t know the exact, fine point Eyes Of Fire is trying to put on our Sins as we trod all over this ancient New World but I do know it is presenting The Truth.
Aside from the obvious desecration blow back, I’m particularly fascinated by how Fire pits British Wee Folk magic against the vengeful retribution of what the movie calls the American Devil Witch, something I’ve never seen examined in any medium.
Unsung classic alert. Well and truly unforgettable and unmissable. On @severinfilms blu ray.

Tilbury (1987)
Well the WTF award from All The Haunts Be Ours set has just been awarded. Jesus.
Taking place during WWII and based on an Icelandic folk tale, Tilbury tells the story of a country boy who moves to the city because they have bigger swimming pools. He’s also charged with checking in on a girl from his home town who clearly did something to him in a barn early in his childhood. It would appear that she’s summoned a demon to provide for her that sucks milk from a nipple on her inner thigh. It would also appear this demon is an officer in the occupying British army. As you would imagine, most of what happens after this takes place in a psycho-sexual dream space. Mind blowing this was on fucking TV.
Profoundly political, Tilbury seems to equate occupation by British and then US forces with evil, tempting demons, which is fine but since it takes place during World War II and a nazi sympathizer is “unjustly” imprisoned it certainly raises more than a few eyebrows. Also, it’s hard to know whether the movie is anti-Semitic or anti-anti-Semitic, so, yeah. What the fuck?
The utter strangeness of the myth, the very Lynchian sequences and profuse projectile vomiting make this one for the books for those of us that think we’ve seen it all. On @severinfilms blu ray.
