🌙 PAPER MOON TINTYPES ✨

A century ago, paper moon portraits were a wildly popular trend. Whimsical oversized moons, painted skies, stars, added a bit of levity to otherwise challenging times. Sound familiar?

So we’re bringing the tradition back to Ottawa, with your portrait made as a real wet plate tintype using the 1850s photographic process.

When I came up with the Film Noir treatment for our last sessions with Alexander, @kaitlabbate came up with the theme: Curtain Call - this was @alexander_shelley last year as Musical Director at the @nac.cna. It was perfect.

We pitched the idea to @greggoryclark at the @nac.cna and he said go for it. Connected the @mayfairtheatre and we were set. Kept with the James Bond nostalgia and played around with how far we could push our treatment.

As always, Alexander was elegant and composed, but with a dash of mysterious in this series. That’s definitely present in the studio B&W images.

This studio session was a little different, I don’t usually do black and white portraits. Film noir was the inspiration for the treatment I pitched to @nac.cna.

With every photo session I’ve done with @alexander_shelley, I develop a thematic. I wanted to create an intimate, stripped down but mysterious look to the photography.

Last year, @alexander_shelley finished his tenure as Music Director at the @nac.cna. We decided to rent the @mayfairtheatre to set the stage. We wanted to created a quiet moment but keep the performance theme part of the photography session.

Eje travarse la rivière pis j’explore yousqu’eje reste.

Yousqu’eje me promène dans les chemins pis j’essaye de mettre du monde pou’ prendre leur portrait. Some disent ouais, some disent non.

Et pis, woyez quoisse qu’eje soune vraiment like au start. Intro full blown Acadj’un avant de faire un p’tit switch avec les étrangers - j’ai trop honte still à 44 de parler coume ça.

I’m in @centretownottawa where I have a surprise guest for our walk. @giacomopanico comes along and asks me some difficult questions:

- why speak to strangers?
- what if you are a little weird?

Answers on @cbcintownandout last week while where I walked around my old neighbourhood and tried to meet some strangers. A lady with leopard print, a local artist and a friend I already knew!

I’m in the Glebe where I meet a regal women with majestic dogs!

I walk around talking photos of strangers and try not to be weird about it.

A bit shy. A bit anxious. But the @intheglebe only had nice people that wanted to chat.

Leaning into the James Bond esthetic, 2018
@alexander_shelley @nac.cna

For something different, I asked @dineriviera if I could do some photos before they opened. It pays to be nice, never know when you’ll need a favour. I’ve joked that Alexander could be the next James Bond, he’s got the looks and demeanour for the role and I leaned into it pretty hard with the location photos. This plays well with people who attend NAC Orchestra shows. A mix of candid and posed images to complete the series. #naco #jamesbond #elegant taken in Riviera Ottawa by @houseofcommon.studio

Landing my first contract with the @nac.cna to photograph Alexander Shelley was a bit of a challenge. I already had a good relationship with the NAC but this was a bigger assignment and I really wanted this project.

I came fully prepared with a printed treatment for the photo session. I also wanted to discover who @alexander_shelley was and what he liked about Ottawa. He was charming and also pretty damn good looking. Alexander is also an attentive listener, conversation with him was easy. I was pumped to get this started.

I exchanged date availability and we had a problem. We had conflicting schedules, I was going to miss out on the project. Shit. I was bummed. DING! A week later, I got an email that Alexander’s schedule had fully opened up, he wanted to work with me specifically. Okay, let’s do this!

I wasn’t going to cut corners and I was going to be sure to bring my A-Game. We had planned 3 half-day photo sessions: NAC studio, Studio and Riviera. I remembered that was his favourite restaurant and I had a connection there.

The NAC shoot was a little more formal. We needed some clean backdrops with various poses including some musical references: piano and baton. I went with a classic look and dark background, keeping the attention on Alexander.

For the session at HoC studio, I went in a different direction: intimate. I always offer options for the client to choose from, the winning images were also my favourite. This is where I got Alexander to choose music on the studio speakers and perform for me. It was a special moment, I wanted to get close and focus on the movement of his hands playing in front of the lens. The image with his eyes closed, hands 4’ tall in the studio.

For @isthisdenial launch, we decided to play with colour and movement. I first did test shots on my own in the studio and then had the set ready for @danielweinand.

Daniel is very talented. Most people know him as the Shopify co-founder. Although only meeting Daniel IRL recently, we were tumblr pals 20 years ago. I followed Daniel because of his fashion photography - he’s a talented photographer amongst also being a designer and music composer.

I was excited to have Daniel in the studio and I wanted to impress. When building the concept for @isthisdenial, we wanted to play with obscurity. Keeping the DJ persona mysterious from @danielweinand previous work. The play with shadows worked with that narrative.
