🌙 PAPER MOON TINTYPES ✨

A century ago, paper moon portraits were a wildly popular trend. Whimsical oversized moons, painted skies, stars, added a bit of levity to otherwise challenging times. Sound familiar?

So we’re bringing the tradition back to Ottawa, with your portrait made as a real wet plate tintype using the 1850s photographic process.

🌙 November 19–22
📍 House of Common Studio, Hintonburg
💰 $125 / tintype
🎞️ Authentic wet plate process

How far could I push a treatment? Development a treatment around Film Noir was a style I hadn’t explored. I like challenges.

While I knew the image needed commercial appeal, I wanted to create a few images for myself. A moody and mysterious portrait echoed the location and tone I wished to capture.

Imagining myself as part of a Hollywood movie poster shoot, this is where I went. Darker lighting just above pitch black with strong cross shadow on the shirt.

It may only be the first week of fall, but we’re already thinking about the holidays. 🎄✨ And maybe you should be too.

Holiday parties at FONO are officially on the books — and both spaces are already filling up with festive get-togethers, office parties, dinners and everything in between.

FONO offers…
🍽️ Festive menus from cocktail-style bites to seated dinners, with seasonal menus created in-house
🍸 Signature cocktails + holiday classics with custom drink programs, open bar or consumption-based options
🎶 Great sound, good food, good drinks because holiday parties should actually be fun
✨ A space that’s already dressed for the occasion. Our curated, design-forward space does a lot of the decorating for you…just bring your favourite people.

We’ll help plan the party, build the menu, pour the perfect holiday spritz and take care of the details. You just show up ready to celebrate. 🥂

Planning something for your team, your friends or your favourite people? We’d love to have you.

Did a whole photoshoot with @houseofcommon.studio as part of the Arts Ottawa package a couple weeks ago. I won’t lie, I kept delaying it cuz honestly I always feel squirmy and antsy and self-conscious when in front of the camera but shooting with @maryn.devine was fun and it felt good! Tbh I didn’t want all the shots to feel stiff and traditional but more dynamic and interesting and still professional. I genuinely like how these came out. Plus, with a little set design using studio equipment , we got one of my favorite shots on slide 2. I love i love i loooove❣️

Found these photos from our very first Ottawa Design Club zine. We had no idea what we were starting.

There was no grand plan to make nine publications. We were making one zine because we wanted to make one, and because Ottawa had a creative scene worth putting on paper.

I think about that a lot now.

Creative work gets very serious once people start paying attention to it. You become more aware of what something means, how it will be received, whether it lives up to the last thing you made.

These photos are from before any of that existed. We were just making the thing.

We’re deep in Zine 0009 right now, and maybe I needed the reminder. @ottdesignclub @theshycreative
