Description:
From the Spanish for “wild growth/undergrowth” or, understood to mean “sickness,”La Maleza: Weeds as Teachers,” is an experimental dance performance and installation created in collaboration with composer and sound artist Anthony Alméndarez (Houston, TX), visual artist Nicole Sara Simpkins (Minneapolis, MN), and featuring choreography by Paty Lorena Solórzano. Through conceptual choreography and improvised vignettes, the dance questions what it means to be uprooted and/or find roots in unfamiliar spaces, and what plants can teach us about healing troubled environments. The work is an invitation into a sensory experience to rethink the concept of “weeds.”

Here are just a few of the performers that you will see at Houston Met Dance’s Sunflower Ball on Saturday, September 26. Buy your tickets now or at the door! 🌻

After many years in the studio together Nicole McNeil and Lori Yuill are melding their creative capacities with NMLY.dance, a convergence of their intersectional interests and individual studio practices. Intentionally, they entered this venture with a desire to deepen their collaborative practice, calling on multiple voices to shape the direction of the creative act. Their goal is to entangle different artistic practices to reveal new ones and rediscover old ones. NMLY.dance projects explore multimedia performance using dance, projections, and sound design always with the goal of melding different perspectives in order to build new worlds for audiences to inhabit with them.

Under the artistic direction of HMD’s Associate Director of Programming Lori Yuill, The TerraForm(ed) Collective is an extension of Houston Met Dance’s Adult Studio programming, aimed at providing dance opportunities to adults who are interested in any and all aspects of dance making. TerraForm(ed) Collective performs dances made in response to nature, and for the Sunflower Ball, is taking inspiration from sunflowers (of course!).

Sunflower Ball attendees will get to witness performance powerhouse Michelle Reyes in a solo from Riddles Three’s June 2026 performance, BIG DOG choreographed by Peri Mey. Michelle is a company member of Riddles Three and a cherished member of HMD’s faculty!

Riddles Three: Founded by choreographer and wearable art designer Persi Mey in 2024, Riddles Three is a physically rigorous performance art company that aims to inspire and connect audiences to personal memories through larger collective themes of conditioning and culture. We work through a blended movement base rooted in martial arts, contact improvisation, and contemporary and modern dance.

Houston Met Dance is excited to have Houston’s own Michele McKnight as the DJ for the Sunflower Ball. Michele has spent almost 20 years transforming dance floors from intimate weddings to packed festival stages.
