From John Kesler, Fall Obsession’s Western Regional Coordinator:

It’s mid October of 2026 and as I write this hunting seasons across Colorado are in full swing. Six years earlier, Colorado dove headlong into the greatest hunting and fishing management debate in modern history. In November of 2020 proposition 114 passed by the slimmest of margins forcing the return of wolves to Colorado. Six years later CPW is dealing with a reintroduction debacle of biblical proportions.

In November of 2024 proposition 127, a ban on mountain lion and bobcat hunting, was shot down by the voters by more than 10 points. The latest of several iterations of the same thing tried at both the commission level and state legislature. Now hunters and anglers are pushing back. Amendment 83 is an opportunity to force a higher standard, one of true data driven analysis on wildlife management decisions.

I read the whole Outdoor Life piece twice. It’s a good story about a hunter fighting the right to hunt. It just never says where his money comes from. HOWL for Wildlife called it out in the comments, so I went and pulled the filings myself. Turns out “hunters and anglers” didn’t pay for most of this campaign. So why lie?

The committee is Colorado Hunters & Anglers for Sensible Wildlife Conservation, TRACER ID 20265052338. It’s raised $170,159. $100,000 came from the Center for a Humane Economy on 9/21, plus $8,254 in signs and flyers. The Sierra Club added $30K. Washburn put in $100. In 2024, Animal Wellness Action put about $886K into Cats Aren’t Trophies, and the Center added $127K. Different name on the committee, same people writing the checks.

Search that committee on Colorado’s TRACER site. It’s public and takes about two minutes. Shoutout to @howl_org howl_org for catching it first. So here’s the question: should a hunter whose campaign runs on Humane Society money be speaking for hunters? Make your case below. Follow @rags.to.ridges and @howl_org A real hunter’s campaign shouldn’t run on Wayne Pacelle’s money.

No hunter will, under any circumstance, take money from Wayne Pacelle and the Center for a Humane Economy.

Nor would they hunt elk pretending to be a resident of a state they don’t reside in.

Ever. This is a con job.

Don’t buy the lie. Vote Yes on 83! by @howl_org

Rags to Ridges isn’t just hunting and public lands. It’s about finding yourself, changing your past, and becoming the best version of yourself. My outlet is the woods. It’s elk bugling in September and bucks clashing in November. It’s a sunset on a mountain, or standing in a river chasing salmon. When I say it’s for you, I mean it.

We’re fighting an uphill battle. Hunting rights and land access are under attack all across the country, and millions of people are stepping out of a penitentiary clean and sober with no plan, no hope, and no direction. I know what that’s like. The goal here is simple: help the men and women society has written off by giving them something bigger than themselves. Public lands. Fire mitigation, trash removal, trail clearing, stream restoration. That work needs hands, and they need a purpose. So I’m gonna give it to them, and the support from this page is gonna give it to them.

Rags to Ridges is coming. This page is the way to spread the message that no matter your situation, change is possible. I’m living proof of that. If public lands, hunting, fishing, and the outdoors matter to you, follow along. The more eyes, the more support, the bigger this gets. Thanks for the support so far. We’ve only scratched the surface. Now help me blow this up so big they can’t ignore it. A share, a follow, even just a like goes a long way in getting the right eyes on it.

Another deep dive time. Does “preferred means” confuse you?

Opponents are treating a preference for hunting like some dangerous, untested experiment. But Colorado’s Title 33 has prioritized hunting, trapping and fishing for necessary wildlife harvests for more than 40 years.

Preferred doesn’t mean ONLY. Primary doesn’t mean ONLY.

So why give hunting and fishing a preference? Let’s talk about wildlife management, conservation funding, food, and the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. There’s a reason this approach matters.

And here’s where the record gets interesting: representatives of several organizations now opposing Amendment 83 supported last year’s bill to remove that statutory priority.

They tried. They lost.

Now we’re being told hunting and fishing don’t need protection.

An ordinary statute is much easier to change than a constitutional protection. Amendment 83 goes beyond the existing statute, establishing a constitutional right and a management preference while preserving necessary science-based regulation.

Watch the full breakdown. Look at the documents. Follow the connections. Then decide whether “it’s already legal” is enough.

YES on 83. Protect Colorado’s right to hunt and fish.

Colorado Wildlife Professionals Add Their Voice to Growing Support for Amendment 83

DENVER, Colo.—The Colorado Wildlife Employees Protective Association (CWEPA), representing roughly 200 current and former wildlife professionals, has formally announced its support for Amendment 83, adding an important professional voice to growing statewide support for Colorado's Right to Hunt and Fish.

CWEPA joins dozens of Colorado-based organizations representing hundreds of thousands of Coloradans, including hunting and angling organizations, agricultural groups, conservation organizations and county governments, that have taken a public position in support of Amendment 83.

CWEPA's position is significant because its members have spent their careers working directly in wildlife management. In announcing its support, the organization recognized hunting and fishing as primary wildlife management tools, affirmed the tenets of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation, and stated that Colorado's wildlife resources are best protected, enhanced and managed by science-based wildlife professionals.

“When the people who have dedicated their careers to managing Colorado's wildlife step forward and take a public position, that matters,” said Dan Gates, campaign manager for Colorado's Wildlife Deserves Better. “CWEPA is joining organizations representing hundreds of thousands of Coloradans who are making a clear and definitive stance behind Colorado’s established model for professional wildlife management. It’s rooted in sound science and has been the proven conservation model that has served this state for over a century.” by @howl_org

DEEP DIVE TIME.

They put “hunters” in the name. So let’s look at the money, the people and the record.

Who’s backing YES on 83? Who’s funding the opposition? And what’s the connection to Oregon’s IP28?

We brought receipts. Watch through the end.

Hunting-ban money. Pro-hunting branding.

Don’t be fooled. Vote YES on Amendment 83.

Wildlife management is complicated. It shouldn’t be decided by emotional campaigns.

In a new Colorado Sun op-ed, lifelong outdoorsman John Stallone makes the case for Amendment 83. He points out that Colorado has repeatedly turned major wildlife decisions into statewide political campaigns: the spring bear hunt in 1992, trapping in 1996, wolf reintroduction in 2020, and Proposition 127’s attempt to end mountain lion and bobcat hunting in 2024.

Whatever your view on any one of those, the pattern should concern anyone who believes wildlife management belongs with biology, habitat data and trained professionals.

Amendment 83 protects the right to hunt and fish while keeping the state’s authority to regulate for sound science, conservation and public safety. Existing regulations stay in place. It creates no right to trespass, and it does not cover nongame or endangered species.

Hunters and anglers fund much of Colorado’s conservation through licenses and federal excise taxes. Protecting that system protects wildlife for every Coloradan, including those who will never hunt or fish.

Coloradans for Responsible Wildlife Management supports Amendment 83.
