On October 13, 1812, Sir Isaac Brock's British and Mohawk forces repelled an invasion of Canada by Major General Stephan Van Rensselaer's United States forces at the Battle of Queenston Heights. Rensselaer was based out of the old patroon of Rensselaerswyck in the modern outskirts of Albany and was in charge of the New York State militia. His role was part of the 4-pronged attack plan to take the British out of Canada at the start of the War of 1812.
There were problems from the start. Issues regarding the role of the militia surfaced as the Constitution seems to imply that the role of the militia was to enforce laws, prevent insurrection, and repel invasion, not lead an invasion. Furthermore, the command structure was confused as Brigadier General Alexander Smyth was in command of a large force of regular Army troops yet was meant to be subordinate to a militia officer. Smyth would end up reluctant to assist Rensselaer in the upcoming battle.
At the Battle of Queenston Heights, Rensselaer was initially successful in surprising the British forces, but lacking enough boats to cross the Niagara River in force, was unable to get the rest of him men, or the supplies they needed across. When the battle turned against him, he couldn’t even get the boatmen to cross back over for a rescue attempt. He forces were badly beaten. As a result of this, Rensselaer’s military career was over. He would continue to be active in the Capital District and a great advocate for higher education helping to found the Rensselaer School (now known as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, or RPI).

On Friday, HRVI intern Liberty Harmon visited the Croton Historical Society in Croton-on-Hudson to conduct research on the development of the Harmon community and the lives of its founders. Joined by HRVI Executive Director Andy Villani and Operations Director Tisha Dunstan, Liberty met with Marc Cheshire, Village Historian of Croton-on-Hudson, to discuss her research and make use of the archival materials housed at the Historical Society.

After the meeting, the team visited Croton Gorge Park, a county park in Westchester County situated at the start of the Old Croton Aqueduct and featuring fantastic views of the 200 foot high New Croton Dam.

Special thanks to Marc Cheshire for curating the research materials and recommending the visit to the park! by @hrvinstitute
