September 21, 1780 — A Hero Becomes a Traitor

For Phebe Brinkerhoff, General Benedict Arnold was a hero.

She had followed his victories and admired the courage of the American general who had fought so fiercely for independence. But in September 1780, everything changed.

Arnold, now commanding West Point, had secretly begun negotiating with the British. On September 21st, he had met with British Major John André, providing him with maps and information intended to help the British seize the vital American fort at West Point.

The plot would soon be exposed. André would be captured carrying Arnold’s papers, while Arnold escaped to the British.

For Phebe, the revelation was devastating.

How could the man she had admired—the American general she had believed in—betray the country he had once fought so bravely to defend?

In Phebe’s War, the Revolutionary War is not just something Phebe reads about or hears from others. She watches history unfold around her—and sometimes, the heroes she believes in are not who she thought they were.

September 1780. The Revolution had changed. And so had Phebe’s view of one of its most celebrated generals.
