🦋❤️🙏The Wall Street Journal's Santa Fe Opera Review:
High Notes of the Season
“The play was ahead of its time, examining Western assumptions about Asians through the lens of gender, and using Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” as a touchstone throughout. Today, gender fluidity and the orientalist constructs of “Madama Butterfly” are regular topics of discussion rather than shocking reveals. The “M. Butterfly” opera deploys them, through astute dramatic and musical choices, to investigate the political and emotional landscape of this story more deeply.”

A night that left a lasting impression. ✨

A semi-staged production of THE RIFT, a powerful opera by composer Huang Ruo and Tony Award-winning librettist David Henry Hwang, made its New York premiere on October 2 at Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall, opening the ninth annual China Now Music Festival.

Inspired by the story of Maya Lin and the creation of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, THE RIFT confronts the complexities of history, identity, and reconciliation, reminding us of the extraordinary power of art to challenge, connect, and heal.

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who brought this remarkable work to life. May THE RIFT continue to reach new audiences and travel to many more stages. ❤️

It was such a precious day to me in Hong Kong with both the big announcement of my city-wide interactive-immersive symphony CITY OF FLOATING SOUNDS 「浮聲之城」being part of inaugural season of the new WestK Performing Arts Centre next year, and gave my keynote-speech for the Association of Asia Pacific Performance Arts Centres Annual Conference 2026. Congratulations to WestK and AAPPAC for such a fantastic conference and gathering ❤️

Tremendously grateful to serve as the 1st composer-in-residence for @seattleopera starting Autumn 2027, when my 5th opera M. BUTTERFLY will open its new season. The residency will culminate in the world premiere of my 11th opera THE WEDDING BANQUET, a new rom-com opera.🪷
