POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We love it when we are featuring living composers at LACO, and this lineup does not disappoint! 🔥

Swipe through to meet the visionaries shaping the sound of today and tomorrow.

🎮 Eímear Noone // The Literal Game Changer: A trailblazing conductor and composer, @eimearnoonemusic has brought the epic soundscapes of video games into the classical vanguard. As one of the world’s premier game score composers, she is responsible for some of the most enduring music in World of Warcraft and other best-selling titles. Through her work, Eímear’s music has reached over 100 million people worldwide, and she continues to be a powerful advocate for creative women in music and technology.

🎧 Mason Bates // Classical’s Sonic Alchemist: The maestro behind the turntable, @masonbatesmusic transforms the orchestra’s sound universe into something entirely modern. He has become a highly visible advocate for the modern orchestra, imaginatively integrating it into contemporary culture with a unique curatorial approach heavily informed by his work as a DJ. Fun fact: he even wrote an opera about Steve Jobs!

🕰️ Huang Ruo // Symphonic Time Traveler: LACO’s own Composer-in-Residence has been lauded by The New York Times for having a “distinctive style.” @huang.ruo ‘s vibrant and inventive musical voice weaves a tapestry that connects centuries of heritage with tomorrow’s avant-garde stage. Drawing equal inspiration from ancient Chinese folk music, Western avant-garde, rock, and jazz, he creates a seamless, organic integration using a compositional technique he calls “Dimensionalism”.

Another year of building ties between the Northwest and Asia.
On September 30, we gathered at the Seattle Asian Art Museum for an unforgettable evening with Asia Society Seattle! Guests enjoyed a cocktail reception, with live performances from Zhengyi Bai , Michael Hawk, and Jesse Snyder, a seated dinner featuring a silent auction, and speeches from our honorees as we celebrated luminaries who embody our mission. Asia Society works to strengthen understanding, foster partnerships, and build a more inclusive future across Asia and the world. Our center brings together leaders in business, the arts, policy, and conservation. This annual celebration honors the people and ideas that connect our region to Asia and the community that makes this work possible.

This year, we honored:
Huang Ruo, a conductor and composer who blends Eastern and Western music into something entirely his own, with work performed everywhere from the New York Philharmonic to San Francisco Opera.
The Snow Leopard, a powerful symbol of resilience and our shared heritage, uniting 12 Central and South Asian nations.

We were joined by:
Kevin Rudd, President of the Asia Society Policy Institute, former Prime Minister of Australia and Ambassador to the U.S.
Gigi Do, Inaugural Annual Benefit Dinner Chair and Director of International Advancement and Major Gifts at the University of Washington
Dr. Koustubh Sharma, Director of Global Partnerships at the International Snow Leopard Trust
Gary Rieschel, Founding Managing Partner of Qiming and Chairman of the Asia Society Northern California Advisory Board and a Global Trustee
Margaret Conley, Executive Director of Asia Society Northern California & Seattle
Tom Robertson, Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Microsoft
Thank you to our honorees, speakers, members, and friends for helping us celebrate the ties that bring us together. 🤝

A night that left a lasting impression. ✨

A semi-staged production of THE RIFT, a powerful opera by composer Huang Ruo and Tony Award-winning librettist David Henry Hwang, made its New York premiere on October 2 at Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall, opening the ninth annual China Now Music Festival.

Inspired by the story of Maya Lin and the creation of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, THE RIFT confronts the complexities of history, identity, and reconciliation, reminding us of the extraordinary power of art to challenge, connect, and heal.

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who brought this remarkable work to life. May THE RIFT continue to reach new audiences and travel to many more stages. ❤️

What a journey it has been! 76 composers, across generations, cultures, religions, and backgrounds, each brought a bold, distinctive voice to one shared project. Together, we created a portrait of America that none of us could have created alone.

To have five hours of new music written for me, to live with the responsibility of bringing it to life, every day, for more than six years, has been both an extraordinary privilege and a life-changing challenge.

I am deeply grateful for the friendships and bonds I have formed with the 76 composers.

Please take a listen: 76 new variations on “America the Beautiful,” so many ways of hearing this country we share. I hope you’ll find it time well spent. ❤️.

"I was different from all other men..." 🦋

I was able to snag this clip from rehearsal for Wednesday Night's Gala, thanks to my good friend @robertstahleytenor

It was so nice to revisit this role that I workshopped with @american_lyric_theater and @santafeopera back in 2019 ( with @susannesheston @johnarida and @jkimisyellow )
