Hubert Massey — Old-School Charcoal Drawing

This drawing reflects my old-school approach to charcoal—no erasing, no shortcuts. I build the portrait slowly and deliberately through line, pressure, and layers of charcoal. The untouched paper becomes the light, while each successive mark builds the shadows, depth, and character of the face. I allow the marks to remain visible because they reveal the process. Every stroke has a purpose, and every mark becomes part of the history of the drawing. This work is still in progress. The completed work will be shown at a later date. taken in Marygrove College by @hubert.massey

The area of Detroit known as Paradise Valley embodied an era of economic growth, first-class entertainment and new opportunities for Detroit’s black community. Before the digital age there were sign painters called Walldogs. In the early 80s Hubert Massey came to Detroit join them. Eventually he became a journeyman sign painter. Journeymen sign painters were those who painted large advertisements on the sides of building, in all weather conditions. These signs are sometimes called “ghost signs” today. Here are some examples of what hand-painted billboards looked like, done by Hubert Massey. by @hubert.massey

This piece was created in 2000. This was the first fresco done in the city of Detroit since the Diego Rivera frescos created in 1932.

If you want to learn more about this process, here is a video created by Channel 7 about the frescos at the DAC in 2000:
