In celebration of 33 years of the Howard University Dance Program, we are proud to present the inaugural HU Dance Summit Series, beginning with “Embodying a Continuum of Legacy” this October 30th, 2026.

Founded in 1993 under the visionary leadership of Dr. Sherrill Berryman Johnson and inspired by the enduring artistic legacy of Katherine Dunham, this session explores the historical foundations of Howard University’s Dance Program and its continued contributions to Black dance scholarship, artistry, and cultural preservation.

Join us for an evening of dynamic conversation, embodied exploration, and artistic exchange as we honor the legacies that ground us and imagine the futures we have yet to create. We celebrate the program’s legacy as a pioneering HBCU BFA Dance Program, cultivating generations of artists, scholars, and cultural leaders who continue to shape the evolving landscape of Black dance and the entertainment industry.

DANCER CALL 💜

Senior Dance major Kai Paul has been commissioned as a featured choreographer for Meet Cute, an external performance taking place November 7 at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, DC.

Kai is developing the work through THDN 198 – Independent Study: Dance Performance under the mentorship of Professor Ohemeng and is seeking Howard University students interested in performing in the piece.

✨We’re back! Get ready to light up the stage!✨

The Howard University Department of Theatre Arts -Dance Program presents the 2026 Fall Junior Composition Showcase, and we’re looking for talented dancers across campus to bring these original works to life.

If you’re ready to showcase your artistry and be part of an incredible presentation, register via the poster QR code and come out!!

Audition Details:
📅 Date: Tuesday, September 8th
⏰ Time: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
📍 Location: The Oddfellows Building (Multipurpose Room) | 1851 9th Street NW, Washington, DC
Registration: 6:00-6:15pm

Requirements:
Must be an actively enrolled Howard student.
Participation in Mandatory Rehearsal Dates: Open availability between 9:00am- 4:00pm on the following Saturdays: September 19th, October 3rd, October 10th, and October 17th.
Note: Additional rehearsals will be scheduled based on your specific choreographer’s availability—please remain flexible!

The Howard University Dance Program, housed within the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts’ Department of Theatre Arts (DoTA), has marked an extraordinary year of artistic growth, interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural engagement, and national visibility.

Following an unforgettable week of senior showcases, our graduating BFA students took the next step—together.

In New York City, they experienced August Wilson's Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, directed by alumna Debbie Allen (@therealdebbieallen) and starring alumna Taraji P. Henson (@tarajiphenson)—an immersion into 1911 and a pivotal era of Black transformation.

Even more lasting: the wisdom shared by Henson, Allen, Dean Emerita Phylicia Rashad, and Joshua Boone.

Lessons that will stay with them long after the curtain call.

From individual journeys to one collective moment.

Our Acting, Dance, and Musical Theatre seniors joined forces for a final performance that captured the heart of their time at the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts (CABCOFA).
