Get ready for something new and spectacular!

Interdisciplinary artist @borinquengallo will transform our Community and Partnership Gallery into a lush, site-specific installation that explores the consequences of disposable consumer culture and its complex effect on the environment, opening September 18! 🌿

With help from the public, Gallo will create an immersive artwork from familiar discarded materials—including netting, caution tape, and plastic bags—into dense, textural weavings. The installation will also include animated projections of butterflies and jungle critters that expand visually onto the surrounding gallery walls.

Plus, YOU are invited to witness and participate in her process firsthand, learn about her practice, and even contribute to the evolving exhibition at the HRM.

Public viewing hours from 12–3pm on:
Wednesday August 19
Friday, August 21
Wednesday, August 26
Friday, August 28
Wednesday, September 2

Support for the exhibition is generously provided by @artbridgesfoundation.

Additional support is provided by @soundassociates and @materialsforthearts.

The animated projections were developed in collaboration with @opticalanimal, a creative video design studio based in Brooklyn.

Exhibitions are made possible in part by assistance provided by the @westchester_county_government and the @cityofyonkers.

“Exquisite Creatures” is coming to the Hudson River Museum this fall! Opening on September 18, this exhibition explores humanity’s enduring fascination with the living world through the work of artist and naturalist Christopher Marley. 🦋

Using animal, mineral, and plant specimens as his medium, @christophermarleystudio creates striking three-dimensional compositions that reveal nature’s intricate beauty and diversity. This is the first exhibition at the HRM that leverages our multidisciplinary nature with our partnership with @artbridgesfoundation, which organized and is travelling the exhibition to museums across the county.

#HRMExquisiteCreatures features more than 3,500 ethically-sourced specimens, including butterflies, beetles, snakes, birds, lizards, fish, sharks, and more. All of the vertebrates that Marley uses in his work are reclaimed after dying of natural or incidental causes, and his insects are collected or bred in an environmentally sensitive manner.

From October 17 through November 1, you are invited to place a photograph of a departed loved one on the ofrenda, or email us a photo that we can print out and place for you.

Día de Muertos is a holiday traditionally celebrated in the southern regions of Mexico where family and friends gather to pay respect and remember family, friends, or even pets, who have died.

Challenge: install “Maya Lin: The Hudson Bight” in under a minute. Ready… Go!

In reality, it took a bit longer to erect this monumental sculpture suspended dramatically in the Museum’s Atrium, with the wire-mesh sculpture cascading into the galleries below, translating advanced topographic imaging and sonar mapping into an immersive work of art.

. A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, @mayalinstudio_ is widely regarded as one of the most influential American artists of her generation. In this work, she depicts part of the underwater geological formation of the Hudson Canyon, which extends more than 400 miles from the mouth of the Hudson River across the Continental Shelf to the Continental Rise in the Atlantic Ocean.

Inspired by a 2018 U.S. Geological Survey expedition, “The Hudson Bight” was the centerpiece of the Hudson River Museum’s exhibition “Maya Lin: A River Is a Drawing,” which opened later that year. We’re thrilled to have this on view once again!

We are proud to announce the acquisition of “The Hudson Bight” by acclaimed artist, architectural designer, and environmental advocate Maya Lin, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, and the National Medal of Arts. Widely regarded as one of the most influential American artists of her generation, Lin has cultivated a multidisciplinary practice that bridges art, architecture, science, and environmental stewardship.

“The Hudson Bight” is now suspended dramatically in the Museum’s Atrium, with the wire-mesh sculpture cascading into the galleries below, translating advanced topographic imaging and sonar mapping into an immersive work of art. Inspired by a 2018 U.S. Geological Survey expedition, the artwork, which Lin conceived as a “drawing in space,” maps an underwater plateau that extends more than 100 miles offshore before descending into the Hudson Canyon.

Maya Lin stated: “My work has always been finding the art in the natural world and my focus on rivers is because, from an environmental view, they are our lifeblood; without them we couldn’t survive. I’m trying to get you to see things that are quite literally under your feet but you had no idea were there. Having ‘The Hudson Bight’ find its home at the Hudson River Museum is the perfect continuum for the work we began with my exhibition ‘A River Is a Drawing,’ for which ‘The Hudson Bight’ was originally erected and to which it has now returned as part of the Museum’s permanent collection.”

Today, we want to shine a spotlight on a longtime supporter of the Hudson River Museum: Richard Fitzgerald, founder of @soundassociates, and his wife Beth!

If you’ve ever been to a show in the #HRMAmphitheater, you have Sound Associates to thank for the high-quality audio that brings the performances to life. Most recently, Sound Associates donated their equipment and expertise to help bring “Borinquen Gallo: Jungle Bliss” to life and transport visitors into an immersive “jungle” made of recycled materials.

Beth, a Board member of the Morsemere Garden Club, has played a guiding role in the creation and regular maintenance of the lovely four-season circular garden that blooms in front of the Museum, bringing joy to all who visit.

HRM’s Director & CEO Masha Turchinsky is shown here with Richard and Beth Fitzgerald at our 2023 Gala. They are frequent sponsors of our galas, which provides vital support for the HRM’s exhibitions and programs.

Thank you to Sound Associates for supporting the Hudson River Museum!

This just in—nature can be super gross!! Learn more from Kathryn Jagelka, HRM’s Marketing Assistant, as she tells you all about the diets of Nepenthes, also known as Pitcher Plants, in #HRMExquisiteCreatures.

Nepenthes are one of several families of pitcher plants, with 140 species native to Madagascar, Southeast Asia, and Australia. These carnivorous plants have pitcher-shaped leaves that form a trap to capture prey. The lid of the pitcher secretes nectar to attract small insects, which are unable to escape from the trap because of its downward-pointing hairs and slick sides.

They also eat poop. 🤢
